Chapter 1The wind was powerful this morning, making my hair blow behind my ears and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It was an early Wednesday, with an eerie feeling in the air. Not that I'm not used to that feeling, it follows me everywhere.
I walked into the large investigation building, the heat hitting me in the face in a welcoming way. I nodded to people I walked passed, telling them a good morning.
"Hey, Mallory. Sleep well?" Madison, one of my closest friends here, asks me as she hands me a mug full of coffee. I take a sip of it and let the warm liquid go down my throat before answering.
"I guess," I lie. With all the disturbing and horrible things that I have to see and hear about everyday, it's kind of hard to sleep well.
"Did you sleep well?" I ask Madison, and she nods her head. After that me and her make small side conversations while sipping coffee before we go into the evidence room and start looking through files; what we're supposed to do.
"Mornin' ladies," Detective Brine, our boss, shouts, passing by the huge room. His loud voice bounces off the walls, making me and Madison jump slightly.
"Goodmorning," me and Madison say simultaneously, then get back to work. An hour passes.
"Don't you wish something interesting would happen?" Madison asks out of the blue. I furrow my eyebrows and look up at her, pausing my search for a specific file.
"What do you mean?" I know exactly what she means. Nothing big has happened in London for a couple months; no homicides, no big crimes at all. I mean obviously it's a good thing, but looking through files and evidence everyday starts to get a little tedious.
"Like, we're stuck doing this everyday, looking through pointless files and shit. It gets tiring after awhile."
Just as Madison finishes her sentence, a man comes running into the room. He must be a 911 dispatcher, I've seen him around the building before. But that's not what I care about, what I care about is the worried look on his face.
"There's been a death at London University, Brine needs you guys to go. Now," He says, and before he even finishes his sentence me and Madison have our coats on and are rushing passed him.
We arrive at the college ten minutes later, and me, Madison, Detective Brine, and others all immediately pile out of our cars. There's already caution tape everywhere, and crowds of students trying to get passed it.
Me and Jace, another detective, walk up to the caution tape, having to push passed confused and scared students. Once we arrive to the yellow strip, I look around and immediately spot a girl lying on the cement, on top of her own blood, indicating that she's dead. I start to get an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, a feeling I get whenever things like this happen.
Her small and petite body is just laying there, lifeless. She was only a couple years younger than me, and she was dead.
Jace stays, asking students and police what happened, while I duck under the caution tape and make my way to her body.
The scene gets more and more disturbing the closer I get. The details are shown more, like how her eyes are rolled into the back of her head, and how her mouth is slightly agape. Shivers are sent down my spine as I see all the blood, getting soaked into her clothing and hair. I had to look away.
As I look up, I notice a broken window, did she get pushed out of it or something?
I look down at the body one last time, and notice blood on the front of her pajama shirt. Was she stabbed and then pushed out of the window?
On that note I run back over to where Jace was standing, holding a notepad and pen while he furiously wrote things down.
"Her name was Khloe Harman. She was twenty-two and this was her third year here," Jace said, before I could even speak.
"I think someone stabbed her, because the front of her shirt is soaked with blood. Also, the window up there is broken, so she had to be pushed out," I point up to the window and Jace's gaze follows my finger. Jace shrugs.
"We're gonna have to wait for the autopsy report."
-
We're all in Khloe's dorm room now, the one with the broken window. Forensic technicians are using tweezers to grab pieces of broken glass, and any type of DNA. There are blood stains on the floor, on her bed sheets, and on the broken window sill, proving my theory of her being murdered and pushed out the window.
Walking towards the window, I take a deep breath and glance down. It's at least seven stories high.
The body has been taken away now, but there are even more crowds of students now, wondering what the hell happened. From up here, I could hear crying and yells of shock, probably from the people that knew her and were close to her.
"Poor girl," I hear Madison next to me, and I agree with a sad nod, looking down at my pale, shaking hands.
