Chapter 2

I stared at the girl in front of me, me narrowing my eyes as tears fell from hers.

"Do you have any idea on who might have done this to Khloe?" I pestered. The girl, Emma, blinked.

"I-I don't know."

"Don't lie."

"I'm not! Khloe was so nice and never had any problems with anybody! She had straight A's and a boyfriend-"

"Boyfriend? Tell me more about him." I say, my voice softening. One thing I learned from watching those stupid CSI shows is that you should always question the boyfriend; even though most of the stuff on those shows are incorrect, this fact is somewhat true.

"I don't really know anything about him," Emma said in between sobs. "Khloe told me that he said it had to be a secret relationship."

"Has she ever told you when she was going out with him? Has she ever came back angry or upset?"

"No, she usually never visited my dorm. W-We're not roommates."

"Do you know who her roommate is?" I take out a notepad from my pocket and get ready to write down the name she's about to tell me.

"Why? Do you think... do you think she could have done it?" Emma's face turns from a sad expression to a worried one.

"Give me her name," I ignore her question; there is probably a big chance that she could have, but we still need to find out more about this boyfriend of hers.

"It's Aviree Conrad. She hasn't been at school for a couple days, though. I think she said something about her aunt dying or something," Emma says, trying to help. She's fiddling with her fingers, her voice soft and quiet as silent tears roll down her cheeks.

"Okay, Emma, you're finished for today. Thank you for your help, and I'm sorry about Khloe," I've had to say that so many times today.

Emma nods into her tissue and cries a bit more, before standing up and walking out of the steel, grey, interrogation room. After the door slams shut behind her, I immediately stand up and walk over to the door, pulling it open once again. Detective Brine, who was inspecting me and Emma through the glass, walks over to me.

"So, Aviree Conrad? Sounds familiar. I'm going to give her a call to come up to the station," He says, and I nod in agreement. Not to the part where he said her name sounds familiar; I'm not sure what he means by that.

"Her name sounds familiar? Has she been here before?" I ask, curious. I've only been working here a couple years so I'm not sure if she's been here before.

"Yes, she was a witness to a murder a couple months ago. Don't you remember? The one where that old guy was freezing bodies and throwing them into the lakes? Her friend was one of the victims," I cringe at Brine's words, that case was so disturbing and one of the reasons I haven't slept in weeks.

"Oh yeah, I remember now. Hurry and give her a call, I wanna see what we're dealing with."

_

Finally, after calling Aviree, she shows up an hour later.

And once the door finally opens and Brine walks in with her trailing behind him, I jump up, and motion for the dark-haired girl to take a seat in the chair across from me. She's a big suspect, especially since she's roommates with Khloe, and because she was supposedly 'out of town' when the murder happened.

"Hello, my name is Detective Hughes. I've been assigned to this case and if you don't mind we're just going to ask you a couple of things," I reach my hand out to her for her to shake, but she ignores it and sits down in the chair. I look over at Detective Brine, and he shrugs, as to say ignore it, she's been through a rough time already.

"Where were you the time of the murder?" I ask, still looking at her. Detective Brine is writing our conversation down quickly, taking notes.

"I was out of town, at my aunt's funeral." She was very blunt when she spoke, sounding like she was bored.

"Where, exactly?"

"In Bristol, it's a three hour drive," Aviree crossed her arms over her chest and shifts in her chair.

"When did the funeral start?"

"Around ten in the morning."

"You are aware that the murder happened around six this morning, correct?" I ask her, and she blinks a couple of times before nodding.

"Then wouldn't you have time to murder Khloe and push her out the window and still have time to get to your aunt's 'funeral'?"

Just as Aviree is about to say something, the door opens and Madison rushes in.

"Guys, they need us back at the college. They were searching through the security footage and they found something," She says quickly, obviously in a hurry. Me and Brine shoot out of our chairs and tell Aviree to stay right there, and that we would be back soon, before finally leaving.

_

Us three walk into the college, and we head straight for the office. There are people already in there once we arrive, police men, some other people who work at the college, and Chancellor Carmen.

"What's going on?" I say, and all five of their heads look over at us standing by the door. Chancellor Carmen walks over to us, and he looks really upset.

"We were looking through the security footage, and we found something big," he says, and we all walk over to the computer that has a black and white video on the screen. One of the other people who work here pushes play, and even though the quality is very poor, you can faintly see a person covered in black, even their face, walking down a hallway. I watch intently as the person walks into the room that was Khloe's and Aviree's, and then about four minutes later, the person comes running out. The screen then changes to a different camera in a different hallway, and shows the person going into another door, then the footage stops.

"Did the person ever come out of there? Where is the door? We have to go look, come on," I say, feeling determined. As I turn to leave, Chancellor Carmen puts his hand on my shoulder and tells me to wait.

"We went forward until about an hour ago, and no one went in or out. We had them," Chancellor Carmen points to the two police men, "go look inside, but there was nothing. It was just a small janitors closet. We're thinking there's some type of secret door in there that leads to another way out, but like I said, the officers didn't find anything."

"You sure? You checked everywhere?" Madison asks, and the two policemen nod.

"Well shit, whoever went in that door has to be the killer. We don't even have any clues on who it could've been," Detective Brine sighs, and then I sigh, too.

"Well it looked like a man's figure to me. The shoulders were broad, the person walked like a man, and the person ran really fast, like an athlete. We could maybe question the guys on the sports teams?" Madison suddenly says, and I nod, agreeing. Everyone else nods, and then the chancellor gives us lists of every boy who was on the college's football team.

-

I call the lab, and tell them to come down to the college and look at the janitor's closet. They'll look for fingerprints, shoe tracks, and any other type of DNA. I also questioned all of the janitor's that work here, but they all seemed innocent. While I did that, Madison started questioning all the boys on the college's football team. There were at least thirty boys on the team, so I told her once I was done with the janitor's I would go and help her question them, too. Which I was, so I'm heading over there now.

I walk into our Crime Scene building, and walk into the interrogation room. Once I walk in the boy talking stops and turns around in his chair, while Madison begins to speak.

"Detective Hughes, this is Liam Payne, and he has some information that you may want to hear."
