~Elizabeth's POV~
I couldn't sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, my thoughts strayed to the sink. A pink plus sign, two black lines and two pink lines stared back at me, once from each test.
In a rush, I had grabbed the three tests, hiding them in my room on the book shelf. The boxes and such were thrown away in the neighbors trash can, tomorrow being trash day. I should've thrown the tests away, too, but I was too sentimental to do so.
I stared at the ceiling all night, watching as eventually the sun came up. My dad hadn't come home last night, although I'm not sure why.
With a sigh, I get ready for school. I'm slow going and anxious, but I trudge through it with a grimace on my face.
Picking out a white short sleeve shirt, black skinny jeans and a pink jacket, I slide them on, pairing the look with white high tops. As of late, the locket sat around my neck, the weight reminding me of the life changing decision I'd made just a few weeks ago.
With a sigh, I grabbed my backpack and made my way downstairs, making a small breakfast and leaving it on the table before waiting outside.
I was a bit early, so I sat outside for about fifteen minutes in the cold before Adi pulled up.
"You'll never guess what happened last night!!"
I can't look at her. If I do, I'll start crying. "What?" I ask softly.
"What's wrong?" She replies instead, her previously excited tone fading.
"Nothing, I'm just tired. I didn't sleep much last night."
"Did something happen?"
"Oh, no. My father never came home. No, I got lost in a good book." A small white lie wouldn't kill me. I just couldn't tell her. Not yet. When I told her, it'd make it real and I wasn't ready to face that.
With a skeptical look, Adi opened her mouth to counter before deciding against it. "Alright. Well, ya girl ain't single anymore." She casually says instead.
"Jake asked you out?" I ask, perking up just a little.
"Yes he did. When I got home yesterday, he was standing in my drive with roses and he was playing my favorite song. It was really cheesy and I loved it so much."
With a smile, I gave her an awkward side hug, trying not to distract her driving. "That's amazing! I'm so happy for you."
"I'm happy too."
A moment later, we pulled into the school parking lot.
-.-.-
I made my way through the day on autopilot, lost in my thoughts.
It seemed as though I blinked and the day was over.
I opened the door to get into Adi's car, but it slammed shut again.
"No. We're not doing this. Tell me what's wrong."
I knew she would snap at some point, but I didn't realize it'd be this soon.
"Adalyn, I don't want to do this right now. I just want to go home."
"Are you dying? Losing your memory? Because you hate your house. You'd never want to go there if given the chance. Spill. Now. We're not leaving until you do."
I sit for a moment in silence, contemplating my options.
She's going to find out sooner or later. I mine as well tell her.
"I'll tell you but we need to get in the car. No one else can hear this."
With a slight nod, Adi walked to the other side of the car, getting in. Once we're in, she locks the doors, implying that I won't be able to leave until I tell her.
