An unfortunate incident causes Brittany to realise that she can't avoid Trevor forever, despite how much she tries.Brittany's POV
"Alright that's pretty much it," Lamar said.I marked through the final count of eight in the routine that we had just been taught. Lamar looked at us and checked we both had it down before going over to the iPod dock and restarting the track. I held the bottom of my back, looking at my feet, breathing heavily. There was no denying this rehearsal had been pretty gruesome. It wasn't very often that any houses, halls or indoor spaces had an a/c in Canada - warm weather wasn't a common affair. However after an already three hour long rehearsal with twelve sweaty dancers in the same room, a/c would've been very highly appreciated by us all.
Right now I was stuck in rehearsals for an upcoming Fever After Dark competition. Lamar had teamed up with Jennie after the success of their Pillow Talk routine in a previous year's FAD. Last time, Trevor and I had been part of a trio in the competition which Lamar and Jennie had choreographed. This year we were in two group numbers - plus we had a duet. Which was what we were working on now.
I flicked my bangs out of my eyes and fanned myself with my hand, focusing on my heavy breathing. I could feel my entire body pulsing to the rhythm of my heartbeat, which was threatening to shatter my ribs.
"Alright the others will be back soon," Lamar announced, referring to Jennie and our other dancers. "So we can run this a couple more times."
Jennie had taken the other dancers to the second studio to work on the group number whilst Trevor and I worked through our duet.
"Good to go?" Lamar asked.
"Yeah man," Trevor said standing in his first position. I continued to walk in slow, spaced out circles, holding my back and looking at my feet.
"You okay Britt?" Lamar asked. I felt both of the boys turn their attention to me.
"Yeah," I panted. "Press play."
Lamar obeyed me and counted us in as the music built up. The track had a lot of accents which gave us opportunities for sharp movement and hard hitting choreography. It was another Pillow Talk piece - as well as our group numbers, where I also partnered with Trevor - but just the two of us made it a little more intense.
We only made it a few counts of eight before we were due to sync up and do a lift, when Jennie lead in the rest of the class. Lamar stopped the music as everyone flooded in.
"It's okay," he said. "It's already really well together anyways. We can focus on it more tomorrow."
Trev and I agreed and headed over to grab water before we needed to get back to rehearsal.
"Hey are you okay?" Trev asked me as I took a sip of water.
"Yeah," I said.
In fact I was not okay. I was tired and sweating and feeling faint. I had become so accustomed to the pain in my feet and my legs and my stomach and my shoulders that I almost couldn't feel it anymore. That was unless I moved. Then it hurt like hell. I felt gross and sticky and wanted nothing more than to go home, take a shower and sleep. Two hours in....
"Alright guys," Lamar called as Trevor and I took our spots with the rest of the group. "Let's just go from the beginning. Full out please!"
Fever After Dark was not quite as appropriate for all audiences as The Next Step or Big Ticket or any other places we performed. Fever After Dark, surprise surprise, is about fever and intimacy. The dancing was pretty sexual at points - and some of the tracks selected by the choreographers included sexual lyrics to accompany the theme. I'm talking guys shirtless, girls in clothes that aren't much more than underwear, the full nine yards. That's why it's an 18+ event. Being part of the numbers was definitely signing yourself up for at least three awkward encounters each rehearsal. For most numbers I did in every aspect of my work I was partnered with Trevor - and no matter how much chemistry we had - it didn't cancel out the awkwardness. And things were even more awkward now - after the almost kiss...
