When James's plan to get his girlfriend back backfires, Riley must decide between herself and her potentially broken-hearted best friend.

Riley's POV
"Hey Riley!" a voice sounded behind me. I turned in the direction that it came from, at the other side of Hidalgo's and smiled at the tall blonde figure who I hadn't seen in what felt like forever.

"Lottie?!" I shrieked and ran toward her, almost taking her out as I smothered her in a hug.

"Hey! I thought that was you," Lottie said squeezing me tight, "how are you? You look great."

"I'm fine," I said nodding and changing the subject, "um...you look different."

"Me?" Lottie said. "Look at you! When did you get the haircut?"

"Yesterday actually," I said, "I felt like a change."

"It really suits you," she said, "come take a seat. I have news!"

"Oooh!" I said sitting down across from her in one of the plastic chairs. "I'm all ears!"

Lottie took my hands in hers on top of the table, smiling ecstatically.

"I...finally found my date to prom!" she said.

Instantly my stomach dropped.

"Really? That's uh...that's great," I said as enthusiastic as I could muster - which admittedly, wasn't very enthusiastic at all.

It's not that I wasn't excited for Lottie, but the whole boy subject was a little dampened for me right now. I was still recovering from a pretty tough breakup.

Today was the first day back at the next step before Nationals rehearsals. When I bumped into Lottie I was on my way to the Studio for the Welcome Back party. Regionals was bitter-sweet. Winning was amazing! It felt like my whole year of hard work finally paid off. However, we may have won the Regional Champions title, but I lost something that meant a lot more to me.

James and I had spent a lot of time together whilst he was in danger of being pulled from the team mid-season. His math grades were slipping and his mother was not the type of person to let that slide. We managed to convince her to let James leave for two weeks, pick up his grades and then return once he passed his test. To the rest of the team that seemed like enough - but not to me. James needed motivation. So I made a deal with him. If he got 70% on his next math exam - I'd agree to go on a date with him. And the rest was history.

Things were going great for us, until Beth showed up at Regionals to tell James she loved him. That was the start of a very long argument. James thought I should've been more trusting. I thought James should've told me what happened instead of me having to overhear it when I was crouched behind a mirror putting my shoes on.

Eventually our voices got louder and louder and louder, tension built and then we both snapped.

*Flashback*
"Maybe you should trust me!" James yelled.

"Maybe you should give me reason to trust you!" I yelled back.

"I thought this worked! You know, people always say 'you and Riley? You guys are like complete opposites! How does that work?' And I say, 'because it does! Because what we have is more than our personalities and differences!' But maybe it's not, maybe this doesn't work!" James yelled at me.

"Maybe it doesn't!" I screamed back. I calmed down a little, my throat feeling like it was on fire from all the yelling. I coughed and choked for a minute before crossing my arms and looking back at James.

"If that's how you feel," I croaked, "then maybe you're right."

"Maybe I am," he said calmly.
