A bigger opportunity presents itself to Brittany, leaving her plans to go on tour uncertain - and causing Trevor to ponder if a long-distance relationship may cause problems for them.
Trevor's POV
I stood in the kitchen, scooping chips into the dip selection which I had found inside Brittany's fridge. I could hear the low buzz of the tv from the living room, and sounds from outside through the open window. It was a warm day in Toronto for once and the sun had been shining since the early hours of the morning. I had been to a RawMotion convention in Scarborough in the morning until around 2pm. I had come back to Brittany's apartment and let myself in with the key she had given me, waiting for her to come home.Much to the disappointment of everyone who came to the convention, Brittany had had to miss today's classes. She had booked an audition for a new short film called Transitions. The script had been given to her by an AD of The Next Step, David. He was working on the crew of the movie and told Britt that they were auditioning for the lead role of Savannah. Brittany and I had spent hours pouring over the script together, highlighting her scenes, seeing what she would have to do to be in the movie.
It was a different role for her, admittedly. Britt had only ever really played Riley. The Next Step was a TV show aimed at children and young teens, nothing like this movie. It was specifically aimed at kids 13+. The story was about a young girl named Savannah who was coping with gender dysphoria and the process of making the transition from female to male. The entire script was very deep and there were plenty of scenes marked:
'Severe distress'
Meaning that Brittany would be required to shed a few tears. Not that she wasn't able to. Her character in particular on The Next Step was no stranger to crying. And Brittany had taken to it like a duck to water - but this was different. The themes of this movie were centred around dealing with prejudice, coping with change, self-harm, etc. So it wouldn't be the kind of crying that lasted a minute long and could be erased with a few tissues and a hug. This would be 'severe distress' just like the script had said.
These were all things Britt and I discussed. There was no doubt in Brittany's mind that she was going to this audition. I had watched her for the few days she had to decide before booking her audition slot. Whilst she cleaned the work tops in her kitchen the script was open in her spare hand. As I sat and watched tv she was sitting with her green highlighter and a cup of tea, making notes on the script. Every conversation we had, Transitions came up. On one of her 'three days to decide' she had stayed in my apartment overnight. I turned over at two-thirty in the morning and noticed that she was missing from the other side of the bed. But I found her sitting on one of the high stools at my kitchen counter, the lights dimmed to low, with the same highlighter and another cup of tea. She was adamant that she was going to do this.
"I mean he obviously thinks I'm right for the part if he told me about it," Brittany reasoned as she drove along the road on the final decision day. "Right?"
"I guess so," I said from the passenger seat.
"And it's a movie. Like an actual movie that will be going to film festivals and stuff," she said as she watched the road, one had on the steering wheel, one hand accompanying everything she was saying with gestures.
"Can you just call already?" I laughed at her. "It's obvious you're going to go to this audition. It's a good movie, and even if nothing comes of it, it's good experience for your résumé."
And that had been it. She had called and booked an audition for today.
The fact that I hadn't heard from her all day was making me unsure of whether or not things went well or things went badly.
