"And where the Hell have you been?!" screamed Daddy on the front porch. He had been sitting in his old rocking chair, holding his prized .22 as you ran onto the driveway. "I-I was staying after school for tutoring. I-I had told you last night. I-I'm sorry." You explained desperately, fumbling over your words.
He hadn't always been like this, not when Mama was alive. He was always happy and joyful, singing Jimmy Dorsey after supper each night and Elvis Presley for us when we went to bed.
"Oh, just one more song Daddy! Please! I love it when you sing for us!" you had begged with puppy dog eyes. You rubbed your Mama's stomach, indicating that you were including Tommy, your soon-to-be baby brother.
Daddy chuckled. "I don't know. What do you think Mama? Should I give 'em one more song for luck?" Mama laughed and smiled. If there was one thing you remember about Mama, it was her smile. She had the brilliant green eyes that shone through bad dreams and the mean people at school. Her blondish-brown bounced as she laughed, complimenting her unblemished pale skin.
"Oh, what could it hurt?" she asked with a teasing smile. So, on you went, singing along to Bob Wills until it was time for bed. Little did any of you know, it would be the last happy night you all spent together as a family.
You did not smile nor did you cry at the distant memory. You stood there waiting for you Father's blows. "You get your ass up here right now (Y/N)! You know the punishment for being late twice in one week!" Your eyes widened. "Daddy please! I said I was sorry! It was for school! I-" You felt a stinging sensation across your cheek as your head whipped to the side. "I don't want to hear any of your bullshit excuses! Get in the house now!"
You cooperated that time, silent sobs that held no tears came from your lips. Without another sound, you made your way over to Daddy's bed and kneeled in front of it. With your hands facing palms up, you sat them atop the soft blanket and imagined your mama and her beautiful brown eyes.
"Remember baby, when things get scary, all you have to do is think of me. I'll always be here to protect you."
You were broken from your thoughts as the first strike of the belt connected with your bare palms. A cry escaped your lips causing another hit to come. "You keep quiet or it's gonna get a lot rougher from here!" With your eyes squeezed tight, you suffered through the next few whippings, your hands seeming almost used to the treatment.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Nothing hard or violent, just three gentle taps on the door. Daddy grunted and looked at you with viscous eyes.
"One peep outta you and not even God will be able to save you from me," he told you in a hushed tone, a stern look spreading across his features
.
Daddy wondered on over to the door and opened it up. "What do you want?" he questioned harshly.
"Hi, I'm here to see (Y/N)?" said a familiar voice. Then it hit you.James?
