─── WHEN THE FEAST CAME TO AN END, Dumbledore stood up once more to explain the rules pertaining to the castle. Most of it seemed to be common sense, but Alice had once heard that common sense wasn't so common anymore. Students were forbidden to enter the Forbidden Forest, but she could only smile to herself, knowing that she had already trekked through the forest without anyone's permission. In fact, she had roamed the forest before the centaurs came across her, although they didn't seem very fond of her presence, so it was probably for the best that no one ventured inside.
Thinking of Mr Rabbit and where he had ventured off to, Alice heard the first year students being called upon by the prefects assigned at their tables. They were supposed to follow them to their respective common rooms so they could get settled for the evening. Lennon stood up first while Alice followed, however, she stopped to wave in the direction of the twins and Lee before filing out of the Great Hall. The prefect ahead of them was a girl with long black hair that she had braided all the way to the end. She had held the middle of her braid in her hands as she led the way out of the Great Hall, explaining that they were headed to the Ravenclaw Tower.
It seemed to be quite the trip and the prefect warned all of them that they had plenty of stairs to climb. But Alice was more occupied with every window the group was passing by. She wanted to stop and look out each and every one of them but found herself reminded to keep moving along by the other prefects that were behind them.
The lead prefect introduced herself as Lauren Mayes and as she fiddled around with her braid, she began to tell the students that the only way to gain entry into the Ravenclaw Tower was to answer the riddle provided by the eagle door knocker. For a moment, Alice paused in her step as a smile reappeared on her face, as she instantly thought of the Mad Hatter and the riddle he had once asked her.
"Why is a raven like a writing desk?" he had asked once before taking a sip of his tea. When Alice didn't answer right away, he gave her a couple of minutes to think it over before he turned his attention back to her. "Have you guessed the answer yet?"
Alice had tried to come up with an answer, but knowing the ways of Wonderland, any logic that she tried to apply to the riddle would practically be useless. She could probably come up with something that would be considered a reasonable answer, but it didn't mean it would be correct.
"No," Alice told him, " I give up. What's the answer?"
"I haven't the slightest idea."
Thinking back on it, Alice never did get the answer to the riddle, along with plenty of other riddles that the Wonderland creatures seemed to love asking her. She was sure though that when it came to the riddles of the eagle door knocker, that there would be a definite answer.
"I certainly hope that I can solve these riddles," she said to herself, thinking about being locked out of the common room if she didn't. However, she had spoken loud enough for Lennon to hear her as he glanced over in her direction.
