Mother and Father decided after Alec went off to study with the Druids that they would give having a son one more shot. They did special rituals together with Maize, Malaya and Mariah to ensure that the new baby would be a boy. Everyone was excited. They were going to send word to Alec, but they wanted to wait until the baby was born then just send for him to come back home. Mother was sure that if he could be around a baby brother his heart would soften once and for all and he would give in to the light. Since Alec never responded to any of their correspondences, they had no clue of the curious things their son was doing in his spare time.

Every night a dusk, Mother would dance in the fields and call thunderstorms or tornadoes or some other violent weather around her. She told the girls that this would suck all the bad out of the new baby. Father laughed at her, but let her hold to her belief. As her belly got bigger she began keeping to herself and staying inside.

Father worked with the girls helping them to master their powers. Maize was now sixteen, Malaya thirteen, and Mariah twelve. Alec had just turned ten. He would stay with the druids until he was twelve. They would each have another birthday before the baby was born. Father said they should all be able to survive on their own by now, without his guidance or care. He said that throughout time witches had to separate or be hunted and killed because humans believed they were all bad and worshipped the devil.

Maize was breeding pegasi and had mastered the art of hiding them in plain sight as horses. She had also learned how to move between the planes and breed the pegasi and train them on on another plane where they wouldn't be noticed. She could call them back when she wanted, or go to them. She had developed a spell with their feathers to make enchanted rings allowing her family to actually converse with the animals. She had also learned to master fire. She could use it as a weapon, a portal, or even to scry into the future or past.

Malaya worked with all animals. She did spells to bring mythical beasts back from extinction or she would hunt ones that were rumored as still being alive. Her obsession was dragons. She had found 3 dragons eggs and was incubating them herself in a "secret" location. It took years to get a dragons egg to hatch. She was very patient. Malaya also worked with her gift of manipulating the earth and growing things. She was very skilled and had used her knowledge to disguise their already hidden home into a plain old oak tree full of flowering vines. Malaya was also skilled in apothecary from her knowledge of the earth and all its inhabitants.

Mariah was a loner. She had a familiar that she kept with her all the time. She preferred to be in the mountains where it was cold and there weren't a lot of people to bother her. She kept her magic to herself. She was very guarded. Father said that she was very much like Mother when she was a girl until she came into her own. He let her do her own bidding and kept the others away from her unless she wanted their company. Her strength was the air. She could even use it to lift herself up and fly. She could also make portals like Maize, but hers were like horizontal tornadoes.

Mother and Father got regular reports from the Druids about Alec, but never any contact from him. They assumed he was angry with them for sending him away. They had no idea that he had taken up with a warlock and the other creatures of darkness he had found. They thought he was safe and in good hands so they did not worry.
