"This is bad. This is very, very bad," Mariah said, tears were streaming down her cheeks.
Father was on the floor beside Mother staring in awe that there was no wound in her belly, just a black line where the dagger had entered. Mother was weeping and shaking. She had her hands around her belly holding on for dear life. Maize was furious. She had known in her gut, like Malaya, that something wasn't right about this traveler.
"What are we going to do? And why was she talking about Alec, Father? I thought he was doing well with the Druids?" Maize asked.
"I don't have any answers, but I will get them. Tend to your mother. Maize, I need one of your pets: fast and strong," Father told them firmly, "I am going home." Malaya and Mariah went to their mother, and Maize went outside with Father.
Maize brought the fire with her hands and called to the sky. In a whirl of white smoke the Pegasus came from the clouds. He was an ashen brown with a silky brown mane and white wings with a brown overlay. He landed gracefully and bowed his head to Maize. She nuzzled his neck with her face. "Hello Kinox, my love," she said. She looked at Father, "He is my pride and joy. He will take care of you."

"You will make me a ring so we can talk? I would like him to be my companion in this," Father asked.
"Of course!" Maize was shocked he thought he had to ask. She plucked a feather from the under side of his wing and wrapped it around Father's finger, and there in a puff of smoke was the ring. The ring was white gold and brown and a perfect fit to Father's index finger. "Don't lose the ring Father. I have to make them, you cannot do it without me."

"I wish you could come with me, Maize, but it just isn't possible. You have to tend to Mother. I will be back. Kinox will get me there and back again before you know it, won't you boy?" Father said, stroking the Pegasus' neck.
"We will return swiftly and safely Maize. I give you my word," the beast agreed.
Maize nodded and watched as Father mounted the pegusus and they took off into the sky. Fury lay down on her feet and whimpered. "I know boy, but you couldn't go," she said petting the bobcat. They walked together back into the house to check on Mother and her sisters.
