When morning came Omega was still seated in front of the make shift shelter the girls had built the night before. Nymph and Stagmar were at the waters edge splashing and catching fish like two small children. Malaya yawned and stretched as Maize got to her feet to get their breakfast.
"No need Maize, I have already prepared your meal. You must not eat in the forest. Eat now and again when you come back here," Omega commanded.
"Why?" Maize asked. She saw cooked fish, berries and greens laid out in front of them. There were two flasks of fresh water as well as pumpkins for the pegasi.
"You will get sick and not be able to leave. You will be stuck there for eternity. No one will be able to save you. You will be a lost soul," Omega told them.
"Can you give us guidance on how to survive in the Forest of Midnight? Can you help us?" Maize asked him.
"No, not can you help us. Will you be kind enough to give us direction on how to survive and get the information we need?" Malaya corrected. She turned to her sister, "He is a Sphinx. You have to ask him the questions properly or he simply cannot answer. It's how he is made."
"I am willing to help you because you are both pure of heart and intention. I am also willing to help you for the selfish reason of moving on. I cannot even remember what I am supposed to be guarding here any more. It has been so long since a person has quested here to try my wards," the Omega said. "I am ashamed to admit it, but to you I trust."
"There is no shame in forgetting things. I can help you remember if you wish. I have no need for whatever it is you are guarding. When I come back for you, I can stay a few days and send Maize home," Malaya offered.
"No. You must help your mother. We will come again. Together. Now for your journey I must keep you another day to prepare you. It is a lot of work and you need supplies that the three of us can make," the Omega said.
He turned his back to them and flew off as soon as he finished speaking, giving them no time to respond. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Maize asked.
"This is the best idea," Malaya said.
They waited about twenty minutes for the Omega to return. "We must fly from here. Get on your mounts and follow," he commanded. They did as he asked.
They flew back the way they had come, but further into the colder center of the mountain range. They had no idea where he was taking them but they knew it wasn't far.

They landed on a sheet of pure ice facing a mountain with an opening that was glowing blue. The ice looked slippery and dangerous, but the animals had no problems walking across it.
"Do not dismount," the Omega told them. "You are witches, not enchanted animals. You will slip and fall through the ice as soon as you touch it. You will die."
