chapter 26: back on the road again

*3 days later*

I woke up in the middle of the night to a scream for help that was quickly silenced by the suction cup sound of a knife being pushed through someone's skull. how did someone get in? the alarms should have been blaring.

"Ben" I said and grabbed his hand. "someone is here and they are killing people" his eyes went wide.
"keep the light off and lock the door" he said. I got up from the bed and locked the door quickly. there was a tiny peep hole in the door. I looked through it. there was a body laying on the floor. my mouth dropped and I covered it with my hand.

it was Nathan.

"oh my god" I said but it was muffled by my hand.
"what?" Ben asked. my eyes starting prickling with tears. I grabbed my stomach. if I get killed then so will my baby and possibly Ben. the worse thing that has happened to my home was when the Wolves attacked. but we might not win this time. I pulled on my black jeans and belt. I slid into my combat boots and grabbed Dan's jacket and my gun and backpack.

"rayne you aren't going out there" Ben said and grabbed my wrist.
"yes I am, Ben. I know how to defend myself" I said and shook out of his grip and unlocked the door. he grabbed my arm before I could walk out.
"you are pregnant" he said sternly "if you die the baby dies"
"I'm not going to die Ben" I said and broke free of his grip. "I've done this many times before and I'm not scared" I poked my head out the door and looked around. silence and an empty hallway awaits. I had to find Negan.

"just wait, I'll come with you" Ben said and put his hands on my hips.
"okay" I said quietly and closed the door. Ben changed into a black pair of jeans and a blue teeshirt. he put on his belt and grabbed his knife and gun and we went out into the halls. he looked down and his eyes broke. there was his brother. dead on the floor. he dropped to his knees.

"no" he said quietly at first "no! no! no! no! no!"
"I'm sorry Ben" I said and hugged his shoulders. "but we need to leave right now and find Negan. he'll take care of this"
"he was my only family I had left" he said and held the corpse.
"I'm your family, Ben, we all are. but please before someone find us. I promise we can have a funeral for Nathan" he nodded and kissed the top of Nathan's dark hair. I teared up a little bit.
"I'll see you later, kid, I promise" he said and put him sitting against the wall.

who could have done this? definitely not one of us. we aren't like that. was it one of the hilltops? did they want revenge for us taking their supplies? a part of me thinks it was Alexandria. but how could Rick even get in here? he doesn't even know we exist, right?

please tell me they aren't here.

"rayne" I heard behind me. I turned and held out my gun. it was Negan. "we need to leave, for our safety. the baby" I nodded and grabbed Ben's hand and starting running with Negan. we escaped out the back and into a RV and he drove away.

we didn't have a lot. some of the food we had stored in the RV.  it was just us, the guns, and Lucille. Lucille is Negan's scary baseball bat covered in barbed wire.

back on the road again.
