I regained consciousness and realized that I had been washed up on a beach.

I had no idea where I was.

I looked down at myself. I was wearing the same coral tank top as before, but I was now wearing capris  (I think that that is what humans call it) which partly covered my legs.

And of course, I was exhausted. I felt like falling face first into the sand, waking up underwater in my bed, and realizing that I am still a mermaid.

I decided that I needed shelter, but I didn't know how to travel using my legs. I tried walking, but instead I instantly tripped and fell. I tried to get up, but my foot got caught in seaweed.

I reached to pull the seaweed off, and my attention went to my hands. The familiar aura around them was gone.

This wasn't a dream. I truly had no power.

I stumbled over to some rocks and saw a spire of smoke coming from what seemed like a city. I dragged myself in that direction, and after a minute, I collapsed.

I found myself in a bed in what I thought was a room in a royal palace.

People were coming in and out, and there were more people were at my bedside, but I couldn't tell who they were or what they looked like because my vision was blurry.

Then, somebody pried my eye open.

I panicked.

But they only put in an eye drop, and my vision went black, then it started clearing out.

I could see who put in the eye drops. She had black hair and almond eyes.

She looked like a queen. Delicate, yet tough. Young and beautiful, yet very wise.

She put the same drop in the other eye and sadly smiled at me.

"Get some rest, child," she said. Then she left.

I woke up to see the boy with the blonde shaggy hair, the one called Aspen. Prince Aspen. He was by my bedside.

"How long was I out?" I asked him.

"Around fourteen hours."

Wow.

"I managed to convince the nurses to leave for a while. They'll be back in an hour to—"

I cut him short.

"Aspen—that day when the lightning hit your ship, the mermaid who saved you: that was me."
