"IM SORRY! I CAN'T HEAR YOU..OVER THE FACT OF HOW DEAD YOU ARE!"
- Sean William McLoughlin

Chapter Sixteen

Amber couldn't seem to fall asleep.

After her "Date" with Jack, she seemed to be wide awake. Her mother returned home long after Jack left. She ended up coming home earlier than she thought, which meant they were able to have dinner together.
Her mother was excited all over again at the fact that she had a boyfriend. Amber tried to make the conversation as quick and painless as possible.

"My daughter going out with the head football player. My, my, you really picked a charmer. I'm so happy for you sweetie!"

Amber giggled at her mother's excitement and finally rushed upstairs. Her mother remained on the couch downstairs, watching the TV.
Amber yawned, rubbing her tired eyes. She was glad that it was Friday, now she had all week to figure out what she was going to do. She plopped down in her desk chair, spinning around slowly and taking a deep breath.
Her stomach was still sore and her nose hurt every time she moved it, but she would live. Luke and Sarah popped up in her mind. They looked like they got the message once Jack was done with Luke.
She had hoped he was done now, that he was over this childish game. She feared them. There was seriously something wrong with Luke. Something internally festering inside him that is causing him to such hate towards Amber.
She ran a hand through her hair hastily, shaking her head and looking around the room. She eyed the window curiously. She wondered if Jack was still up. She walked over and opened the glass, letting the cool breeze blow in.
She couldn't see a light inside his window, but she did hear his music quietly playing. She noticed his window was also open, his curtains flowing out the open space with each breeze. She bit her lip, grabbing a piece of paper.
She folded it into an airplane, aiming it at the window. She threw it, watching it fly and hit the side of the house. After a few more attempts, she finally made it into the window.
She giggled, making several more and making them fly into his room. She hoped he would eventually notice, but it didn't look like paper airplanes would do the trick. She huffed and grabbed her phone. Luckily, after that incident with Luke, Jack wanted to make sure she had his number. She sent a quick text to him, staring at the open window a few feet from her house.

"Are you still awake?"

She leaned her elbows on the window sill, holding her head with her hands. After a few quiet minutes, she heard quiet footsteps come close to the window. Jack popped his head out, looking over and smiling.
Amber instantly blushed when she looked to see him shirtless. He was currently just in a pair of plaid pajama pants. He bent down and picked up one of Amber's crumpled airplanes. She burst out laughing when he chuckled and threw it back at her.
The moon reflected his pale chest, Amber's eyes trailing down his stomach. She looked away as he went back inside to grab a shirt. Slipping it over his head, he appeared again and started climbing out.
He swung his legs over, and sat on the edge of the window. Amber decided to do the same, both smiling at each other. She tried not to look down, knowing her fear of heights would definitely kick in.

"Can't sleep either?" Jack asked quietly, keeping his voice low so no one else would hear.

Amber nodded, rubbing her arms and stifling another yawn. She rubbed her face, sighing. Jack watched her place her hand on her stomach, smiling a little at him.

"Amber? Don't be scared, okay? I'll protect you. Luke and Sarah aren't going to get you." Jack reassured Amber.

Amber smiled and nodded, looking at the ground again. He stretched and let out a sigh, looking up at the moon.
