- Sean William McLoughlin

Chapter Thirteen

The school bell rang in Amber's ears. She couldn't focus on anything. Her stomach felt horrible and her nose was sore. She gritted her teeth and suffered through the last remaining classes.
Her mind was scattered and the teacher's lectures were blurs in the back of her mind. She couldn't keep her hands from shaking, so she hid them under the desk. A headache started forming soon after she ran into Jack. She pinched the bridge of her nose and closed her eyes.
She didn't know what to do. She wanted nothing more than to tell Jack what had happened. He could help her, he could stop Sarah and Luke. She was terrified though, she now knew what Luke was capable of. Plus, her mind flashed back to the messages she had received on her phone.

"Stay away from Jack."

She realized she had left her sketchbook at home in a rush to get to school. Her sketching was a release for her. Having her safety blanket not here made her day just that much more miserable.
When she finally collected her thoughts, she took feeble breaths to try and lessen the pain. She carefully walked to her locker and shoved her things into her bag.
She turned her torso, flinching. She held onto the locker door, grunting a little as she cradled her stomach. She snapped her head up when she heard Jack's laugh down the hall.
Her fear increased when she looked up to see Sarah and Luke walking with him. They seemed to be cheerful and happy as they walked together.
Jack spotted her stare and waved at her. Sarah's smile dropped a little as she stared into Amber's eyes. Amber gulped and turned away, looking down at the ground instead.

"Amber! I'll see you guys around later!" Jack said his goodbyes and stopped at her locker.

Amber felt the tears work their way into her eyes, but she bit her lip hard and tried not to let them drop. Sarah's heels clicked past her, but she could feel her laser stare burning into the back of Amber. Jack smiled brightly at her but Amber couldn't muster one up at the moment.

"What's wrong?" Jack said questionably, furrowing his bushy eyebrows together and tilting his head.

Amber forced herself to grin a little as she slung her backpack over her shoulder. She started to walk with Jack out the door. Sarah's words replayed in the back of her head. She didn't want to stay away from Jack, he was bringing so much happiness into her life. More than she's had in awhile.

"So, since you are coming to hang at my house today, I have some video games that we can check out! I'm pretty boss at games, if I do say so myself."

Jack interrupted Amber's thoughts with his enthusiastic voice. She watched Jack flip his long hair that he didn't have and wink at her.
Amber's mother would be at work all day, so she had plenty of time to be next door at Jack's. Amber nodded at him, but couldn't stop looking around to see if she spotted Sarah and Luke.
Jack reached for Amber's hand, but saw that it was tightly clenched to her sides. He looked closer at her and realized she didn't look okay. She looked visibly upset and she's been acting weird today. Maybe she was sick?
He didn't say anything until they were at his front door. She seemed hesitant to come inside, but Jack quickly coaxed her in. It was warm and smelled of cinnamon as she set her stuff down by the door.
Jack yawned and stretched his arms as he headed into the kitchen. He pushed his green mop of hair out of the way before grabbing some cookies and milk for the two.
Amber looked around the large living room. There was plenty of space, and a comfy looking brown couch with a wide TV hanging on the wall in front of it. Amber sat on the couch, shifting around until he came back. He quickly popped in the video game and turned on the TV. The window was open, shining in the light from outside.
