- Sean William McLoughlin

Chapter Twenty

Jack's mouth dropped open, staring at Amber. She shifted slowly in her bed, her fingers starting to twitch. She was moving very slow, her head shifting from side to side.

"Amber?" Jack whispered, leaning close.

He pressed the call button as he watched her face closely. Minutes later, her doctor and a nurse came walking in. They surrounded her bed, watching as she woke up. Finally, her eyes started fluttering open.
She had a blank expression on her face, her eyes slowly looking around the room. Her eyes finally settled on Jack, who waited anxiously. He smiled at her, holding her hand tightly as she blinked a couple times. She looked dazed, trying to figure out what was happening.
She tried sitting up in her bed, groaning a little. Jack helped her sit up, stuffing pillows behind her for support. Her hands were shaking as she looked back at Jack.

"Amber? It's me..Jack. You're in the hospital right now. Do you remember what happened?" He asked quietly, flickering his eyes over to the nurse checking your machines.

Her body ached with every move, especially her ribs. She sucked in a breath, holding her hand to her side and wincing. She had a slight headache, but the rest of her body felt funny. She figured it was the pain medication they had put her on.
She reached out a shaky hand towards Jack who gladly took it. He breathed a sigh of relief, feeling his legs grow weak. He pushed his green hair out of his eyes and smiled sadly down at her.
She remembered what had happened. Her concussion was making bits and pieces a little blurry. Jack made sure to fill her in on things she didn't remember. She took small breaths, trying to subtle the pain in her ribs.
She looked at her face in a mirror by her bed, skimming over her bruised face. She froze at the thought of Luke, she was completely petrified at him now.
Jack rubbed her arm, unable to keep his happiness inside. Amber smiled a little at him, her mind still fuzzy from the drugs. She soon lost that smile. Luke, this was all about Luke. He did this to her.

"What did I do to deserve this? Luke..he..he did this to me. He is the one who caused this. Jack, I'm so scared." Amber whimpered, holding her face in her hands.

Jack gently climbed in bed with her, careful not to cause her discomfort. Amber gladly rested her head on his chest, listening to his rapid heartbeat.
He smelled of vanilla, her favorite scent now. It calmed her nerves and cleared her mind. Jack kissed the top of her head, holding her close. He was lost in thought and didn't notice Amber's fingers clenched tightly around his shirt.

"Why would Luke go through all of this just to get me with some girl? It doesn't make any sense, he wouldn't do any of this." Jack pondered on his own question, sighing in frustration.

Amber's gears started turning. His words floated around in her mind, making her shake her head until it hurt.

"Jack, W-When we were fighting, he said some things to me. Sarah..he didn't want you to get with Sarah."

"That can't be true. Sarah has been wanting to-"

"Let me finish..please. He told me I took you away from him. I took you away from him, he said, and that he was going to teach me how it feels to have a broken heart. Jack, Sarah was a coverup..a distraction. The real person was Luke..he wanted you, Jack."

Jack's mouth dropped open as he looked down at Amber. Amber wiped away her tears and nodded, looking down at her bandaged knuckles. Her eyes flickered over to Jack's hands who looked the same as hers. She picked them up gently, examining them as she gave time for him to register.

"W-What!? That can't be true..but he's my..practically my brother. What the hell!? It still doesn't make sense. Just wait until I get my hands on him."

Jack lifted her chin to look at her, looking over her face.

"I'm not going to stop until this is over. I've already broken promises about protecting you. I can never forgive myself, but I'm not going to stop until Luke is done. I can't let you get hurt again. I can't." Jack whispered, rubbing his thumb along her cheek.

She closed her eyes and sighed, listening to him. Suddenly, she felt something soft press against her lips.
She opened her eyes to see Jack kissing her. She softly kissed him back, grateful for the distraction. They pulled away, staring into each other's eyes. Amber sighed and sat up, taking a deep breath.

"Can you help me walk around? Since I've been out for most of the day apparently, my whole body feels so stiff. Also, you said my mom was in the cafeteria. I'm sure she is going to want to see me."

Jack pursed his lips for a moment before nodding. He got up, pulling back her covers. The sight saddened her and Jack noticed. He kissed her head and gently wrapped his arm around her waist.

"You might be a little dizzy for a few minutes, but don't strain yourself. Give yourself time to get back into reality. I'm right here to help." Jack assured Amber.

She nodded and gripped her IV stand, her knees wobbling a little. Her stomach growled hungrily as she stood up on her feet. Jack kept a strong arm on her and they slowly left the room. Amber put one foot slowly in front of the other, Jack helping her with each move.

"Your mother has been hysterical ever since I called her here. She will be so happy to see you." Jack said, smiling.

Amber smiled back at him. She had grown tired quickly, resulting in Jack putting her in a wheelchair. He pushed her through the hallway, watching Amber look around.

"I've never liked hospitals." Amber stated quietly, looking back at Jack.

He agreed, he never was a big fan of it either. Her eyes lit up when she spotted her tired mother across the room. She was sitting at a table, eating a little of the piece of pizza in front of her. Her face was solemn and her eyes were puffy from crying.

"There she is." Jack whispered, wheeling Amber towards her.

Amber started sniffling, trying to wipe away all the tears forming again. Jack whistled, catching her mother's attention. She turned, registering what she was seeing. The pizza slipped from her fingers, hitting back into the plate. She let out a gasp, causing others to look at her.
Amber laughed, sobbing too hard to reply to her mother as she ran towards Amber. Jack stood back and beamed at them reuniting. Jack looked over to see a few policeman walking in. His smile dropped a little as he watched them head in their direction.

This is going to be a long day.
