Joshua's POV

"Just come in," I say, forcing a smile on my lips. My mind wanders off to the last 5 minutes of the walk back home. It was so damn awkward. It's better not to think about it.

Violet slowly walks past me, looking around my house.
"Sorry, it's still a bit dark in here. We haven't finished unpacking yet," I say, trying to cover the silence. "It's okay, I don't mind," she mutters under her breath.

"Uh, you can sit down on the couch," I offer, pointing to our worn down couch. She tentatively puts down her bag and takes out her computer. Oh, I was expecting her to take out a huge book from the library, considering that she's a nerd. This girl just keeps surprising me more and more.

"Okay, so the lava lamp is a good idea?" she asks, typing on her computer.

"Yup, I'm cool with it," I assure, sitting down beside her. She shifts uncomfortably and I groan internally. I just gave her the wrong idea. I move towards my side a little and say, "So what do we need?"

"Um, we need to research on lava lamps first. That's what Mr Smith said, right?" Violet asks, looking at me. I nod, but inside I have no idea what she was talking about. Mr Smith said that? Oh wow, I must have been distracted.

Distracted by Violet.

What?! Did I just really think that?

I convince myself that I was hallucinating.

"Do you have wifi?" she asks all of a sudden. I take her computer from her lap and type in the password for our wifi. Hmm, I really didn't expect Violet to be such a different kind of nerd. I look at her from the corner of my eye and notice her intertwining her fingers nervously. Feeling sorry for her being awkward in my house, I quickly return her the computer.

I watch her silently as she types furiously on her computer.

Ugh this silence is killing me. I don't like her so friends should be fine right? I mean, she won't get the wrong idea if we were friends right? Plus, I'm a sociable person. Silence is my enemy.

I take in a deep breath.

"Okay, I don't know why we're being so awkward around each other and I don't know why we just can't be friends. We can't forever be awkward if we're going to be lab partners. So I'm gonna take this initiative to ask you. Would you be my friend?" I ask, trying not to weird her out.

Guess what she did?

She laughed nervously in a soft voice.

The cutest laugh in the world.

"At least you offered. So, sure, I'll be your friend," she answers quietly, smiling at me.

I finally relax. If we're going to be lab partners for a year and partnering for an assignment for 3 months, I'm sure we can say more than 2 words to each other while feeling at ease. Friends.

"On this website, it says that lava lamps have been around since 1963. Uh, some Englishman named Edward Craven-Walker invented the first version of a lava lamp." Violet says, laughing.

"Okay, I'll go grab my computer to take down notes," I say, getting up. "No, its okay, I already wrote them down," Violet objects. "Then I'll get some snacks. What flavour of chips do you like?" I volunteer.

"Oh god, I absolutely love barbecue chips," she exclaims. I grin.

Inside though, I feel a little suspicious. We become friends and suddenly, it's like she's a whole different person. Not that I don't like it.

But I really want to find out what happened to her.

Violet's POV

When Joshua asked my whether we could be friends, I was delighted. I hate being awkward around other people. I had been fighting against my urge to be my old self whenever I'm with him. Because every time I look at his perfect face and my heart will skip a beat. Being his friend makes me feel more at ease. Being his friend means I could be close to him without being weird and creepy. I could finally talk to him like the way I talk to Jade. Which is good.

Jade waves her hand in front of me. "Hello? Violet?" she asks, waving more vigorously. "Sorry sorry," I apologise.

"Were you thinking about Joshua Parker?" Jade asks, smirking at me. I blush sub-consciously. "AHA! I KNEW IT!! YOU DO LIKE HIM!!!! Vioshua, Jolet, Vishua, Joshlet..." Jade rattles off.

'What are you doing?" I asks, laughing at my best friend.

"I'm coming up with ship names for you and Joshua!" Jade points out.

I laugh and blush even more.

"OMG you're blushing!!!!" Jade snickers.

That's when it hits me.

I have a crush on Joshua Parker.
