Chapter Twenty Three- Lucky Little Girl

Artemisia's P.O.V
The machine in the corner gave out continuous beeps. It was making it impossible to sleep. Fox had passed out around an hour ago, and, seeing as there wasn't a clock near-by, I could only tell it must be around midnight from the window in front of me pouring in darkness. I gazed out of the window, watching the beautiful white stars like tiny splatters of paint on the ink black sky. Sighing, I glanced at Fox, watching his chest move up and down in rhythmic patterns, our empty pots of ice cream at his feet. This sure had been an interesting school trip. I was only expecting to escape the troubles of everyday life, and instead I met a tribe, stopped a wedding, and got shot in the stomach. Not your average residential trip.
What scared me is the fact that I didn't know what was going to happen after this. For a person who likes to plan ahead, there was no road to take. Just a pile of crumbled bricks we had to salvage something from. Would Fox go back to his tribe? If so, would they try and make him marry the Princess again? What if he came back with me? How would we even get back, if neither of us knows where we are? So many unanswered questions swarmed my brain. I buried my face in my pillow hoping for sleep to take swiftly.

The sunlight filtered in through the window, and my tired eyes squinted, attempting to adjust to the light. As I sat up in bed, a woman came bustling through holding a clipboard. She had a kind smile on her face, one that would relax you just from looking at it. Coming over to the side of the bed, she started to speak.
"I'm glad to see you awake, miss." The woman said in a soft voice that calmed instantly. That must be what they taught at medical school then. "You had a very close call there, we were worried you might not make it. The bullet missed your vital organs, only two millimeters away from puncturing your lung. You were very lucky indeed. You are allowed to leave in two days time, once we see that you have fully recovered. I'll leave you be." With that she departed leaving me to think over what she said.
Two millimeters.
Two millimeters from almost certain death. A punctured lung was incredibly hard to fix, and there was next to no chance of me surviving. What if the soldier had...No. I would not think like that. I survived and that's what mattered. As my mother liked to say, 'no if's, no but's, no coconut's'. I would not dwell on what could of happened, because it didn't.
I got shot, I didn't die. I got shot, I didn't die. I got shot, I didn't die.
I repeated the words like my own mantra. They were all I had that were stopping me from having a full-on panic attack.
Just two more days of being stuck in this confining hospital. Two more days added to the four I had already spent here. I wondered what had happened to the rest of the school, if they left without me or not. If they did, then I don't think my parents would be to happy that the school lost their little girl.
I watched Fox sleep a few seconds longer, before lying back down and falling asleep myself.
