"We've been walking for four hours now, shouldn't we make camp?" Sean asked.
"To open, so unless you want a mutated rat chewing on your leg keep moving." Kris replied gruffly clearly tired from the long trek.
"Little longer guys than we'll make camp before the sun sets and its to dark to see anything." I told them.
That's when we heard them. A blood curdling screech uttered from somewhere overhead and I knew what it was right away. Screechers!!! What life was left at this time had been severely altered and the screechers were no exception. They were a creature of nightmares with leathery, razor sharp talons that could cut you in half with ease, and a mouth filled with hundreds of pointed teeth. Even their saliva is enough to kill you carrying all sorts of infection.
"What the hell was that sound?!" Hannah yelled out clearly panicking.
"They're called screechers and if we don't move now they'll kill everyone of us! Head for that grouping of trees so they can't get us. Joe and Tessa since you two have weapons keep your eyes on the sky and shoot at any sign of movement." I called out to our group.
We started to run as fast as we possibly could with Joe and Tessa in the back keeping the rest of us covered. We made it half way before a volley of screeching reached our ears and I knew they had spotted us. Next thing I heard was a crack and the twang of a bow string.
"Here they come!" Tessa shouted as we all began to run even quicker than before.
"Let them come and I'll fill these spawns of Satin with lead." Joe said sounding thrilled with a grin stretching ear to ear.
I couldn't be sure but I thought there was three of them after us. After a few more shots from Tessa and Joe we were just reaching the edges of the trees when suddenly right in front of us a screecher crashed into the trees.
"That's one less to worry about." Tessa said, a little to soon.
Some how the screecher managed to pull itself together and get back up. It went to take of, but it was futile. Tessa and Joe had riddled it's wings with holes. So now it wasn't swooping down on us, but it was still just as dangerous and was standing right in front of us.
It made a slash at us which caused us all to scatter. That was a mistake. The other two had landed and now that we were separated could take us on individually. Tessa was trying to defend Hannah and Kris from a screecher that was going after them. Joe and Sean were dealing with another. That left the angry, injured one and it was staring me down.
I was running in between the trees with all the effort I could muster. The screecher surprisingly was able to navigate through the trees with ease. I burst into a clearing and to my dismay the only way out was a ledge twenty feet above my head.
The screecher let out another call and began to advance on me. All I could do was grab the nearest branch off the ground I could and swing at it to try and keep it at bay. It swung it's claws down at me and missed by only inches. I tried to step back just to find that I was already out of real estate between me and the ledge. There was the screecher and I knew it was about to go for the kill.
Crack!!!
The screecher fell to its side with a spurt of blood from its head. Standing there on the edge of the clearing was Joe with his pistol outstretched.
"Shouldn't go running off, won't always be there to save you Damian." Joe said with a big grin on his face.
"Never been so glad to see you man. Thanks." was my reply.
Our conversation was cut short by a scream from somewhere off in the trees. We took off running with what little energy we had left and that's when we found where it was the scream had come from.
A screecher may dead with an arrow through its neck, but it wasn't the only one on the ground. Tessa lay on the ground grabbing at her leg while the others were standing around her. She had a deep cut on her leg that Hannah was trying to bandage as best she could.
"What happened here?" I asked in a hurry.
Kris was the one to answer my question," Well after me and Joe had dealt with the screecher coming after us and he went after you I went for the others. Just as I come running up Tessa got slashed by that screecher trying to defend the other two. She had dropped her crossbow and was about to be killed, so out of instinct I ran to the bow and shot the thing. Luckily it was enough to kill it before it got us."
"Does that feel better?" Hannah asked after doing the best job she could with Tessa's injury.
"Oh ya that bandage you made of leaves feels so much better! NO IT DOESN'T FEEL BETTER!" Tessa shouted.
"I'm sorry, I don't know what to die. I've never had to do this before." Hannah said with tears in her eyes.
"It's fine you did the best you could. Sean see if you can find water. Hannah find any herbs you can. Joe, Kris can you guys get a fire going? We'll have to make camp here." I told them all.
Things were not going in are favor.
