Two or three maple leaves cracked as soon as I stepped out from the car. I pushed open the cemetery's metallic gate and walked slowly amongst the tombstones. Most of the names printed on were fading and all that was left was just messed engravings. Cameron was standing ahead of a grave surrounded by dried and wilted roses. He dressed in black all over and looked like a wraith. I stood by him, resting my head over his shoulder. I haven't seen him in two days because he was - as he claimed - busy.
''Do you know her?'' I asked him. His eyes were fixed on the name which was Emily McCarthy.
''No, I don't,'' Replied he.
''I thought you-''
''It makes me feel better. You can talk to them and they listen. They might just even reply back but pity we can't hear them.'' He said.
''What were you talking to her about?'' I asked curiously.
He turned to me.
''You need to realize that you can't possibly know everything about me, Vanessa.'' Cameron said.
I began to speak and he silenced me with two fingers on my lips.
''I know - your childish ideas about sticking together forever and happily but come now, Vanessa, there's no such thing as forever and even if there was I probably wouldn't live long enough to know it.'' He finished, making his words sound so dramatic and cruel.
''Is that what you consider us? Just a childish idea with rainbow crayons?'' I asked angrily but I tried to keep my voice down in a place like this.
''Call it whatever, love. There's no such thing.''
''Then even our love doesn't exist and it's just a childish game for you.'
''That could work too,'' He said with a smile and turned around, walking away. I followed with slow steps until we were both out of the cemetery.I dropped Vanessa off to school and set my destination to Diego's. My mate Doug was seated on one of the stools chatting with Diego.
'Hey, Cameron.' Doug said.
'Hello. So where's our man?' I said.
''He's on his way. Brought his treatment with him I'm sure,'' Diego said. I sat down and lit up a ciagrette.
'So, you think this'll work again, Cam?' Doug asked canvassing me.
I shrugged. 'It better. Or I'm going to have to make him feast with the beasts.' I said
'Speaking of that - I can't believe you gambled with Bernard and his men, Cameron, what the hell were you thinking?'
'Of myself?' I replied with a questioning tone in my voice and he sighed. Diego gave me a look and a stupid smile. ''I'm sure it wasn't just yourself, Cameron.'' He said and I glared though I did flush.
'Believe me, it was just me.'
Whilst we gave each other challenging looks the door opened and Giles stepped in with his active attitude and straight, self-assured walk. It seemed to me as if he had just came back from an important meeting because of the suit he was wearing and it made me make up my own suggestions which settled later on having a random date with his secretary. We stood up and shook hands then we emerged outside to the back of the bar where there was nothing but a pavement and a sound of a barking spaniel. Or just a tyke.
We huddled in a circle.
'Well? Where's the treatment?' I asked.
'Where's my money?' Giles asked smiling. I gave him his stack and he took it from my hand and placed it inside his case.
''Come with me,'' Said Giles. He walked inside again into the bar and we followed. We took the stairs that led to an upper room. It was quite in here, not like the asylum downstairs. He set his case on a table and opened it. It revealed inside three small injection tubes.
'It's sort of a hypodermic essence-' Giles started.
'No, not again. I'm not trying that one. Ever.' I said while feeling my voice choking.
' Cameron, I certainly didn't get this to dissimulate you. If we give it a shot..' He stopped and rested a hand on my shoulder.
'Come on, Cameron.' He said as he picked one of the injections up and caused the liquid to rise inside. He grabbed my arm to raise the sleeve but I jerked away.
'No - I - I'm not doing this.' I said and took a step back to the door.
'Cameron, just try it!' Diego cried.
'No! I'm not!' I opened the door and left, landing at the ground level, I took off and drove away from Diego's.'Anyway, he's just too bored to attend his classes.' I said to Bethany as we strode out to my car.
'But that's not an excuse, Vanessa. I think he's dealing and you're covering up for him.'
'What, drugs? Don't be silly, Beth.' I said.
She didn't reply. I gave her a ride home and then I decided to pay Cameron a visit. I adjusted the mat that laid crumbly beneath the door. I rang the bell, waited for a few moments until Cameron opened up; without even looking at who was standing before him he started yelling.
'I said no!' He exclaimed.
'What?'
He looked at me.
'Oh. It's you. Thought you were that arse. Come in, love.' He said and I stepped in. He kissed my cheek.
' So, what were you saying no to?' I asked him while I put my jacket over his couch, which he sat on without further due.
'Something silly so don't bother. How was your day?' He asked.
I sat beside him. 'Not bad.You know that little playground across the street from school?'
'Yes, what about it?'
'Well today Bethany and I were hanging about and I found a very old note that I left there when I was six. It was hilarious and I can't believe I used to think seesaws were the center of tornado spells.'
He grinned. 'And you also thought that this note was a time capsule left by the Germans before you recognized your own scrambled handwriting,' Cameron mocked and it made me laugh. I shoved him by the elbow.
'You should've seen my handwriting back when I was at kindergarten! It was neat!'
He laughed.
'It was neat Cameron! Really I used to write always on the lines and then after I had finished I'd decorate the page with butterflies and roses. I once drew a bumblebee but I didn't have a yellow crayon so-'
'So you used mucus instead?' He asked with a smirk.
'You're gross,Cam.' I beamed. 'I lost my appetite to actually finish the childhood story of my Fiona's like diary in Shrek.'
'I wouldn't want to know about your past. It doesn't matter,'
I crept closer to him. Our foreheads touched. 'You know, you're a mass of mystery.' I told him.
'I'm a mass of misery,' He said. I looked him in the eye and leaned forward. He closed his hazel eyes and I could hear him breath heavily but yet lagging in each breath. When our lips began to touch he backed away.
'What's wrong?' I asked incredulously.
He looked different. His face changed and he touched his forehead.
'Cameron?' I called his name, sensing my heart beginning to pound aggressively.
He gasped hardly as a wave of pain took over him. He gripped his hands on the back of his head.
'Vanessa, leave. Go home now!' He cried.
'Cameron I'm not leaving you, just tell me-' I stopped. He leaned against the wall. It was like he was almost shrinking in pain. My eyes were going watery. He bent on his knees and I held him by his shoulders.
'Call - call Diego. Tell him to come over at once.' He demanded.
'O-okay.'
He stood up suddenly and walked hastily to his room.
'Cameron, wait!'
But too late. He slammed the door shut.
