A couple of hours passed by and I was awake again. I flipped to the cold side of my bed and felt the pillow. Then I sat up and stretched before I got out of bed and got dressed; leaving my apartment soon after.
'I'm at Villas's. Meet me there.' Diego said to me through the phone while I was driving. I smudged and headed towards the destination. I arrived and pulled my car at the parking lot and walked to the entrance. It was a warm noon time, best time to lunch and the sun finally gave up her pride and shone down at us. Unfortunately, Diego was inside the restaurant and not occupying one of those beige chairs outside with worn out pastel ribbon - probably from last year in the occasion of celebrating the coming blossoms of spring and decided even September should have pink ribbons hovering out like a concord standard. A valet pulled open the door for me and I stepped inside the central heated restaurant. All I saw was a bunch of velvet settees and fake -vintage- crystal chandeliers.
'This was apt for you, Diego?' I said as I pulled my seat and sat down.
'Good seeing you too, Lockwood.' He said. I smudged again. 'You don't look well,' Diego added.
'I haven't been sleeping much,' I smirked. 'Why the grandeur again, Diego? Since when do you prefer plushy, pompous places like these?' I asked him. His dark brown eyes glared into mine. I pushed my hair back with a hand and lit a cigarette. 'Better than hanging around rusty places,' He said. I laughed. 'You're definitely changing, Hill.' I told him and he shrugged. Menus came.
'So how's Vanessa?' Diego asked me while his eyes gestured, fixed on the menu and his mind trying to settle down on a choice of a meal. I shifted uneasily in my seat.
'We're done. So stop bringing her up, there will be no need.' I told him. 'And have a burger with beer for devil's sake, don't go classical on me too, Diego!' I added; my tone rising. He looked at me with stunned puppy eyes.
'What do you mean, you're done?' He asked with the same bloody eyes look.
'She made it clear that I've been treating her like an obnoxious jerk and I told her to leave. Or that's how it went- I don't remember but it's over. At least I can't hurt her now.' I said. 'How could you think that you're hurting her? The girl was in love with you!' He exclaimed.
'Getting with her was a mistake and I've learned my lesson. I told you Diego and you know me; you were even surprised when I led her on instead of ditching her like the others. I don't want to love anyone because I simply can't fall in love and that's it. I just wanted to amuse her in my way and we messed around for a couple of days but I certainly wasn't expecting her to fall that hard for me and if I stood by and let her do it, she would've got hurt.' I said. 'Hurt, hurt, hurt! How,Cameron?' Diego yelled.
I almost slammed my hand against the table but I held it. 'I've got two months left for me, Diego, so just shut the hell up! What were you expecting me to do? Let her fall in love with me, have a sweet, melting relationship and then in two months, I'm gone. Dead. And it's going to be my fault.' I cried, replaying Vanessa's words in my head. 'Can't you see, Cameron? You're the one who ended it because - you care! You care about Vanessa and deny it or not, admit it or not, you're in love with that one girl that changed something inside you and you need her!' Diego said. It was true. Vanessa changed me just by being so spontaneous and innocent; so caring and loving for an ass like me. She made me happy, she was around. I needed her like hell but I simply couldn't do this to her.
'I..' I began to say when a female voice interrupted me to take our orders.
'What can I get for you?' She asked, her eyes fixed on the mini note that she held without even looking at us. My heart leapt out of my chest. It took everything in me to keep my nerves down and play my role.
'You're kidding right, love?' I asked Vanessa and she darted her eyes to me the second she heard my voice. She just froze in place.
'Cameron? What..'
'It's obviously not just me, there's Diego too. We're innocent costumers trying to get a meal but now I've lost my appetite,' I told her and her green eyes penetrated mine. To my surprise she turned to Diego.
'What can I get for you, Diego?' She asked him with an angel like smile and if we weren't "done" I would've kissed her but my cocky subconscious keeps holding me back.
'You should definitely try out the raviolis,' She added, not looking in my eyes like I like her to but in Diego's. What the actual hell?
'Uh, sure.. I'll - we'll have some raviolis, thank you,Ness.' He said and at that instance I - without awareness - kicked his leg under the table. He shook and Vanessa looked at him then at me. I smiled slowly and she rolled her eyes and walked away to pass our orders.
'Ness? Ness!? The devil is wrong with you, Diego?' I yelled.
'I'm sorry but she was being nice,'
