Part 2: Coffee and Letter

After a few days prior to that incident, the judgment day of Eren Jaeger was closing in, and he was still in a coma in his cell. Of course, Levi was busy, hand picking the squad who would be with him while keeping an eye on Eren. Petra was aware she won’t be chosen by Levi, since it’s evident that there are a lot of boys that are better than her. When she heard that Auruo, Gunther and Erd were handpicked by the captain, she knew they were already complete. As she was making some coffee, her mind was wondering, why she wasn’t chosen at all.

“Petra…” A calm and familiar voice calmed her mind down a little, and she face the door behind her and saw Levi. “I want to ask something to you.”

Her eyes were filled with delight, since in her heart, she would do absolutely anything to please her captain. “Of course Captain! What is it?” She gave her warmest smile towards him, as their eyes met. Levi immediately looked away, and scratched his hair a bit, then looked at her again.

“I would like you to join the Special Operations Squad, if ever the Scouting Legion would win the argument against the Military Police.” Levi puffed out a sigh. “So, do you accept my offer?”

She was definitely happy, and would accept it immediately. She actually, did not expect that she would be handpicked by Levi, out of all the other members of the scouting legion.

“Of course I do Captain! But…” She looked down, thinking of the right words to say. “Umm… why does it have to be me??”

Levi turned his back and faced a window. “You’re actually one of the strongest members, and you have potential. And I am certain; you can protect Eren with Gunther, Erd and Auruo with all your might.” He slightly grinned, and it faded away in a blink of an eye. “Don’t tell me you’re rejecting my offer.”

“N—No!!” Her voice was stammering due to the tension of anxiety. “I… I just… I just wanted to know why…” She was cut off by Levi as he turned around and put his hand above her shoulder.

“I’m just kidding. I hope you get along with Eren.” Suddenly, his attention was shifted to the coffee she was making. “What’s this?” he went by the table, and saw a cup filled with coffee, as the aroma drew him near. “Coffee?”

Petra nodded and bravely answered. “Yes Captain!!” She smiled warmly again. “Would… would you like to give it a try??”

Levi nodded, and took the cup filled with it. He sipped from it and made an expression which was different from when he was facing the titans, and conducting discipline to the members of the scouting legion. Instead of a dead cold serious face, he showed her a faint smile. As she witnessed the smile, it just made her fall for him more and more. She stared at his amiable face, and wanted to ask his opinion about it.

“C—Captain… what do you think about the Coffee I made??” She was anxious, and excited to hear the Captain’s remarks.

“Heh…” He put down the cup and looked straight into her eyes. “It’s delicious. When we meet up about how we deal with Eren, I would want you to let everyone in the operations squad have a taste of this.”

“Wh—what?!” She was definitely surprised.

“Why don’t you put up a coffee shop? That would be great too. Maybe, when all this ends, I will grab the opportunity to visit the shop every day. It might remove the stress from my job.” His expressions were blank, and emotionless, but based on his remarks, she was enlightened, and her heart was beating louder every time she remembered the complement. All she wanted to do right now was to hug him, but she can’t do that, since in her mind, she tells herself, she’s still too young.

“T—thank you… Captain!!”

He snapped his tongue once. “You don’t need to call me Captain in these casual settings. Just call me by my name. It’s enough.” She put both hands over her chest, and looked at him. “Will do so…” She put them down clasped together. “Levi.” She smiled at him again, and he waved her goodbye.

“I’ll see you by then Petra. I have to go to the court room and deal with Eren’s ‘titan’ case.” He left, leaving Petra alone. She was definitely happy, tears would want to fall from her eyes. No one can’t determine how happy she was, despite all this chaos occurring. She wanted to confess her feelings to him, but she can’t do it head on, so she took out a piece of paper, and a pen.

“Dear Levi…” On that blank piece of paper, she was starting to write a letter, but it would take time since she needs to think of the right words to tell him. The right words to say how much she admires him as her Captain, and how much she loves him as a whole person. She was half way done, and needed to think of more. Probably, words of gratitude, to thank him for taking care of her.

She knew his expressions were plain emotionless, but she wanted to write this letter, to see the smile he made when he drank the coffee she made. She wanted to see his tender smile again… she wanted him, to know her true feelings towards him… but she was afraid he might turn his back on her completely. She needed to be brave, and must address this letter to him at the right moment, at the right time. Surely, she can’t get his mind occupied with her sudden confessions after all the years she’s been working in the Scouting Legion, especially when there’ll be another issue brewing up again. She must leave him concentrated.

As soon as she knew it, it was already night time. “Did it all go well?” She thought. She stood up from the table where she was writing on. She wasn’t done, but she needed to continue it at home.

She skipped a bit due to the joy she’s feeling, and she looked up the dark blue sky, covered with clouds. “I wonder what my father would think if he heard who I admired…” She thought to herself, and continued to walk to where she’s staying at.
