Izzy's POV
"What were you thinking?!" Isabelle asked and Rafael sighed, shifting his weight on his other foot."It's not that big of a deal."
"Okay, sit down." Isabelle said and pointed at the couch. He did as told and she sat down next to him. "Listen. Try to hear my voice and understand what I'm saying, okay?"
Rafael rolled his eyes. "You sound like my dad."
"Well, I am his sister." Isabelle replied. "Wait, which one?"
"Alec." Rafael said.
"Of course." She said. "Anyway, back to the point; listen to me, okay? Of course I'm pissed that you lied, it makes you a bit less trustworthy and I hope you don't feel good about doing that. But it's also not just about you. I was put in charge of looking after you guys and like it or not, you're still a kid, you do as your dads say and when they leave me in charge, you do as I say. It's not just a major fail from you, it's also a major fail from me. You had the guts to lie to my face and I was stupid enough to trust you. Do you get that? We're both a little less trustworthy now."
"They don't have to know." Rafael mumbled.
"Of course they do." Isabelle replied.
"I'm not a little kid!" Rafael argued.
"Really? Cause you sure are acting like one." Isabelle said. "Grown ups don't exactly sneak out."
"Because they don't have over careful parents telling them what to do." Rafael mumbled.
"Has it ever occured to you that they're not being careful to annoy you or because they don't have anything better to do than make up stupid rules to torture their kids with?" Isabelle asked. "Cause the reason they do that is because they really care about you and love you a lot and only want your best. They want you to be safe and they want you to not be exhausted in school when you should be focusing and they wanna know where you are at what time because they wanna know you're okay. You have the best goddamn parents and you should be pretty goddamn grateful for that. Okay?"
Rafael nodded silently. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied."
"No, you shouldn't have." Isabelle said, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. "But we all make mistakes and stupid decisions sometimes, it's part of growing up."
"What kinds of stuff did you do?" Rafael asked with a laugh and Isabelle stood up, clapping her hands together.
"Time for you to go to bed."
"Izzy!" Rafael said laughing. "Tell me!"
"No, I never lied to my parents." Isabelle said and took his hands, pulling him up from the couch. "Or my babysitters."
"Yeah, right!" Rafael said.
"I'll tell you about those times some other time." Isabelle replied. "Only if you then promise to be smarter than me and be more grateful about everything your parents do for you and your brother."
Rafael smiled slightly. "Yeah, of course."
"Now go to sleep or you'll be like a zombie tomorrow at school." Isabelle said. "And don't make noise, Max is already asleep."
"Good night!" Rafael said before hurrying upstairs. Just then Isabelle heard the frontdoor opening and Alec's and Magnus' quiet voices talking.
"Hey." Magnus said as they walked into the livingroom. "The kids are asleep? Everything went well?"
"Yeah, about that..." Isabelle said and saw Alec's blue eyes widening. "Calm, they're alive and well. It's just that Rafe might've lied to me about his curfew and only now went to sleep."
"What?" Alec asked.
"He said his curfew was eleven." Isabelle explained. "Then around ten Max said it was actually seven on a school night so I called him back here and we had a little chat and I sent him to bed."
Alec and Magnus looked at each other, then Magnus grinned and Alec started laughing.
"What?" Isabelle demanded. "Is that some kind of a stress reaction? Are you mad?"
"Mad? No." Magnus said laughing. "Kids will be kids and boys will be boys, Izzy. You think we haven't seen all the tricks already?"
"You'll understand if you have kids someday." Alec said as he threw himself on the couch. "I don't like the fact that he lied and I would've been pissed if he got into trouble, but your face looked like one of them killed the other one or you have no idea where they are."
"Trust me, lying to stay out for couple hours longer is a little hiccup." Magnus said. "You don't need to look so scared. I'm sure he learned his lesson when he got caught. I'm sure he didn't expect to actually get away with it either."
"Oh, the poor guy will be so tired in school tomorrow." Alec said, running his hands over his face and to his hair. "You did great, Izzy."
She smiled, feeling surprisingly glad and relieved to hear that. "Thanks. Though now I feel like I might've been a little too hard on Rafe."
Alec waved his hand dismissively. "He's tough, it's fine, at least he learned not to mess with you."
"He said I sounded like you." Isabelle pointed out.
Alec smiled. "And he has learned not to mess with me either."
"Lightwoods." Magnus said, rolling his eyes.
