Stay
Warnings: angst, mentions of death, violence and a possible
trigger
A/N: this is my first time writing angst-like situations so sorry if it's not the best.Flying. Falling. Those were the only two things you could think about as you sat on the roof of the Tower. The wind was cool, causing goosebumps to pop up on your skin. You didn't feel it though. All you felt was guilt.
The mission had been terrible. You blamed yourself. Too many people, innocent or not, had died all because they'd been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You closed your eyes, letting the wind blow over you, when you heard the door close and footsteps. The person sat down beside you. You looked over and saw Bucky watching the skyline. He turned his head. He didn't have to ask. You knew each other too well for that. He just wrapped an arm around you and pulled you to his side.
"Are you going to be okay?" He asked, concern laced in his voice.
You thought it over. Were you?
"Eventually. I guess." You said, glancing up at him. His eyebrows were knit.
"You fight so many bad guys and do what you believe is right, then you have one day, just like this, and it makes you question all of it." You say, leaning into him.
"I know." He said.
You looked at the city and the lights coming from every building and thought about what it'd be like to be normal.
"You know, the bad things can't outnumber the good things. This mission may have been horrible but think of all the good things you've done." He said reassuringly, squeezing your shoulder.
"Thank you, Buck." You sighed.
You sat together silently for a long time, drowning in your own thoughts. There'd been so many innocent people, and while Bucky's words had been comforting, they hadn't made the situation any better. You curled your legs to your chest and wrapped your arms around them. You rested your head on your knees and let a tear loose. You sniffled and Bucky's grip tightened.
"I'm here." He said softly.
You shivered and moved closer to his warmth.
"It's cold out here. You should go in."
You nodded and he helped you up, pulling you into a hug. He kissed your forehead and took your hand, leading you inside.
Bucky walked you to your room. Neither of you spoke, but that was okay. It was a comfortable silence.
"If you need anything..." Bucky said.
"Stay." You whispered. "Please stay with me. I don't think I can be alone." You pleaded.
"Of course." He answered, nodding.
You lead him to the bedroom and changed into something warm in the bathroom. As soon as you laid down you knew that tonight would be restless, even if you were safe in Bucky's arms.
People. Everywhere. Hydra had captured so many people. Now they had been forced into buildings to eventually be brainwashed and trained. Not if you could help it. You watched every building of the base and shot at agent after agent until there were only a handful left.
"I would stop now, Agent Y/L/N."
You turned towards the voice and saw a man in a uniform. He was highly ranked. You could tell by the badges covering his collar. He held a remote with a big red button in the center. Your heart skipped a beat.
"Either stand right where you are, or try me. Then they're all gone."
You ran through your options and found you only had two. Stay and die or run and kill hundreds. You chose neither and pulled your gun out slowly from its holster. You aimed at his head and had pulled the trigger. But you were a millisecond too late. His thumb came down just as the bullet hit him. The explosions surrounded you as you ran.
You woke up whimpering and crying. It was bad enough having to do it once, let alone reliving it again. Bucky had his arms wrapped tightly around you. You cried into his chest as he stroked your hair.
"It's okay. It's not real." He mumbled comfortingly. "I've got you, doll."
Bucky hated seeing you like this. He wished he could've gone on that mission instead of you. But it was all over now. Nothing but a haunting memory. He hated that you had to go through it.
"It's all my fault." He heard you whisper.
His heart broke.
"Y/N look at me," he said softly, lifting your chin with his hand, "Its not your fault. He would've pressed the button anyway. But it wasn't your fault."
He pulled you closer and you buried your face in his chest.
"I don't know what I'd do without you, Buck." You said, your voice muffled.
He laughed to himself and rubbed your back. You eventually fell asleep again, and Bucky held you, waiting for the next nightmare to come.
