I'll Be Home For Christmas
Warnings: none
A/N: I realize it's nowhere near Christmas but when inspiration strikes...

Christmas. The most wonderful time of the year. At least that's what everyone else thought. The holiday had once been a time of extreme happiness and love. Now it brought sadness.

The forties had been a war ridden yet magnificent era. Especially for you. Christmas of 1941 had been the best one yet. Your husband, Bucky Barnes, had decorated the entire house with festive lights and little trinkets. He'd bought the biggest tree that would fit in your house. It was also the Christmas you found out you were pregnant.

The two of you had been ecstatic. You'd wanted a child for so long. That's why Christmas was significant. Sadly, disaster struck the next year when you had a miscarriage. You were heartbroken. Bucky was devastated. You mourned for awhile. Bucky was drafted soon after, and you didn't see him for a long time. Then things become complicated.

Long story short, you volunteered to help with the war effort as a nurse. SHIELD found you and you let them experiment a different version of the serum used on Steve on you. The results were practically identical.

Now here you were, an Avenger in the 21st century. You loved your job, but it was taxing sometimes. The most bitter-sweet moment was when you found Bucky a year ago, broken but alive.

The mission had been complex. No one but the team could know. You'd infiltrated a Hydra base and found all of his files. He'd escaped. You eventually found him hiding in a safe house just outside of New York. He agreed to come back with you.

He gradually became part of the team. His memories came in flashes occasionally, but he still didn't know who you were. Little did you know that he'd fallen all over again. Bucky, even though he had no recollection of your past, had gone head over heels for you.

Now you sat alone in the common room. An old Christmas record played and the tree glistened. You sat on the sofa with an old blanket wrapped around you and coffee in your hands. You had a wonderful view of the city from there.

You stared through the window, deep in thought. The events of nearly 70 years ago ran through your head. You didn't notice Bucky sneak up behind you.

"All alone?" He asked, tilting his head.

You smiled slightly as he sat down beside you. You set down your coffee and offered part of your oversized blanket to Bucky. He wrapped it around his shoulders and inched slightly closer to you. It all felt so familiar to him.

"The view's beautiful isn't it?" Bucky asks, gazing out of the glass.

You nod.

"Is something wrong?" He asks, furrowing his brow.

You shrug, "It's just... This time of the year is always a little hard."

He looked at you questioningly.

"I don't know. I guess it's that all these people are so happy right now with their families. Kind of leaves me by myself." You say, tears forming in your eyes.

"Hey, you're not alone okay." He said, wrapping an arm around your shoulders.

"You have the team. You have me. Always-" he trailed off, suddenly tensing up.

"Bucky?" You asked.

He stared straight ahead as the memories flooded in.

Bucky shook his head.

"My name is James Buchanan Barnes. I was born in 1916. My best friend is Steve Rogers. He became Captain America. I was drafted during World War Two and became part of the Howling Commandos. I fell off of a train and lost my left arm. Hydra took me and froze me for decades. I married Y/N   Y/L/N in 1940. She's my everything. We had a child, but it didn't make it." Bucky repeated, like he'd memorized everything he'd just said.

You stared at him in awe before throwing your arms around him.

"You're back." You said excitedly.

"Hi doll." He smirked, just like in the 40s.

You kissed him, grinning like an idiot.

"I love you." He said between kisses.

"I love you too." You whispered back.

You pulled away and he pulled you close.

"I missed you so much." You said into his chest.

"Don't worry, doll. I'm not leaving ever again." You teared up when you saw his signature smirk.

He had tears welling in his eyes, too.

The two of you eventually ended up laying on the couch, holding each other. The blanket was draped over both of you. Bucky's arm was wrapped tightly around your waist and one of your hands was tangled in his hair. M

"Merry Christmas, Y/N." He whispered into your hair before you dozed off together for the first time in 70 years.

Another A/N: I'm going to try to make my next one-shot with Steve since I've only done one of him. Thanks!!
