Rocky went upstairs for the band meeting, but his words lingered in my head. I don't know why I hadn't seen it coming, or maybe it was the fact that for as long as I could remember it seemed that Ross didn't even know I existed. The fact that for once he loved me more than he has ever loved any other girl is just unbelievable. I was snapped out of my daze when I heard a crack of thunder. I rushed as fast as I could upstairs, and I have no idea why. The second I opened the door, the TV was on in the main room and everyone was glued to it. An emergency storm warning was on for an extreme thunderstorm that's going to take place overnight and leave days of aftermath. Rydel grabbed her phone and started dialing. Rocky almost slapped it out of her hand. "STOP CALLING MOM."
"I HAVE TO LET HER KNOW." She yelled. They both argued until Riker broke them up. Rydel bolted into her bedroom and Rocky left to go into his. I followed Rydel, and calmed her down while Ross, Ellington, and Riker talked about what they would do to prepare. It took around ten minutes, but soon enough I calmed her down. I led her back out, and all of us headed downstairs to bring equipment up. It was dark when we finished and everything was safe. Riker headed back to his room, while Rocky and Ellington headed into theirs. Ryland brought his laptop into his room, and Rydel and I headed into our room to chat. Ross was left alone, and for a moment I felt bad, but then remembered he wanted to do a recording inventory on the studio laptop.
"You guys are getting pretty close, huh?" Rydel asked, the second the door closed.
"I guess so. You sure you're alright? I mean, with earlier and stuff?" Rydel looked down at her phone.
"Yeah. I just REALLY miss Mom and Dad. I was the closest to them, and now only you won't yell at me for it." Thunder cracked in the distance.
"I guess I miss my Mom too. She's so far and I feel like all we ever do is fight."
"You know, Riker isn't handling it too well either. He didn't even want to leave at first, until Ross came in the middle of the night. Then the shock of seeing Ross snapped him into wanting to be R5 again."
"Really?" Riker didn't show how much trouble how was apparently having. He seemed fine to me.
"Yeah! You know how he shuts the door to his room every night? Well one time I walked in and saw him with a tiny little photo album just looking through the pictures. He even cried a little. I sat down next to him and we looked together. He really misses them."
The whole fact that Riker had been crying shocked me. He seemed fine. Then it occurred to me. The dark circles under his eyes every morning. The dark circles that made him look like he had two hours of sleep. The dark circles that made him look like he got far less sleep than the rest of us. He was up all night, missing his mom and dad. In all of my thinking, Rydel had been fluffing her pillow and laying down."Well, goodnight!" She called as she turned off the lamp. I turned onto my side and fell asleep.
The excessive wind woke me. Lightning flashed through the blinds and it was immediately followed by thunder. The storm was right on top of us now, and the rain smothered everything in it's path. I tried going back to sleep, but I couldn't. I peeled the covers back and set my foot down on the carpet. I tried to turn on the living room lights so I could see but the switches didn't work. "UGH." I cursed under my breath.
"Sarah?" A whisper called from the couch.
"Yeah? Hold on I'm coming." I stumbled over to the table, then felt my way to the couch. I rested my hand on the arm while I found my way around.
"I'm over here. Come on." A hand grabs my hand and leads me closer to the couch. I sit down on the stranger's lap, and a flash of lightning reveals that it's Ross.
"I can't see a thing." Hopefully he'll catch the hint that I really can't see ten inches away from me.
"Well, I'm Ross, and your eyes will adjust soon enough. You're such a goof." He giggled.
"You're the goof! You're out on the couch at like three in the morning!"
"Two in the morning. I can't sleep."
"Neither can I." He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tight. I rested my head on his shoulder and brought my legs up from the floor. I got so close to him that I could feel his heartbeat thump against mine, and for seconds I could swear they beat at just the right time. Lightning flashed and thunder cracked, but nothing was safer than his arms.
