Chapter 10: Repentance

After a bit of silence Sam pipes up and says,                                                                                                            

"Man I was not prepared for how ugly that thing would be up close."

"So I noticed something kinda weird about it.",Mike says. 

"Uh-what?",Sam asks. 

"The Wendigo. It had a scar.",Mike says. 

"So?",Sam asks. 

"I've seen it before. We saw these old pictures of some guy with that same scar- and he was transforming into a Wendigo.",Mike replies. 

"You're kidding.",Sam marvels.

"It was one of the miners who'd been trapped,back in the 50's...in the cave-in. Which means that thing is 80 years old. At least.",Mike finishes. 

"Spunky for an old timer.",Sam remarks. 

"They cleaned this place out. Killed a lot of people.",Mike adds.

"They? You mean there are more of them?",Sam asks. 

"Yeah.",Shay confirms. 

"How many?",Sam asks again.

"Too many.",Mike replies. 

Then the three continue through the mines. 

"I think we're close. To it's lair.",Sam says.

"How can you tell?",Shay asks.

"I don't know...I just feel...really terrible all of a sudden.",Sam answers.
"Ditto.",Mike and Shay reply. 

"I really don't wanna go in there .",Sam says referring to the freezing water.
"There's no other way through. ",Mike explains.

"Guy is that what I think it is?",Sam wonders.

"Shit. It looks like a grave.",Mike says. 

"Oh god. Guys. This is Beth's watch.",Sam says getting chocked up.
What? Let us see.",Mike insists. 

Sam shows them the watch with "Beth W" engraved in the back.
"Look there was a cross here.",Sam says.

"So this is where she was buried?",Shay asks thinking out loud.
"But...Who dug her up?",Sam thinks. 

"Let's keep moving.",Mike says. 

"Fine I'm going in.",Sam says looking down a the water. 

Mike drops down an shivers. 

"Come on it's okay.",Mike says. 

"You sure?",Sam asks. 

"Well I'm not dead yet. 

"Famous last words.",Shay jokes with a smirk.

The girls get in the freezing water and shiver.

"it's freezing I can't feel my fingers.",Sam states. 

"Holy shit.",Mike says. 

"Wait a minute I thought you said you reached the deepest end?",Sam questions. 

"Oh I didn't say that. I said it was okay,meaning like there weren't any sharks or anything in here.",Mike says. 

"Sharks. Great. Thank you.",Sam sasses. 

As they trudge through the water they notice their bodies have sunken down more.
"It's getting deeper.",Sam observes.

"Yeah...hey it's sloping up again we're gonna make it.",Mike says.
"Don't jinx it.",Sam orders.
