"Yeah, it'll be real scary. We might even see a bear..." Chris smirked. "Or a garbage can."

That made all of us crack up. At least, the boys did. I just kinda chuckled and kept on walking along the old, rusted tracks.

About an hour after we left Irby's billiards, we all continued walking along the tracks that seemed far out of town- with all of the rolling green hills surrounding us like blankets.

The bright blue sky was visible for miles, providing a clear path for the sun to beat down on our backs. As we all kept trudging along, I didn't have much to say. I was lost in my thoughts for most of the time.

Though, the boys laughed and talked, as always.  We sipped from our canteens as the sun beat down on our faces.

"I'm getting hungry. Did anybody bring anything?" Vern asked us all.

I turned to look back at him.
"No."

Teddy agreed: "You should've brought somethin' Verno, this was your idea."

"But I didn't bring anything, so I figured you guys did..." Vern asked, and everybody stopped in their tracks then.

I started to really concern myself now, as that was the one thing I had forgotten to grab on my mental list of necessities. I shook my head no, in shame.

"Wait, wait, wait." Teddy interrupted, his voice cracking, slightly panicked. "You mean neither of you brought anything?"

"Nope." I replied, cussing to myself for such a stupid mistake. The others followed suit with their disappointing responses.

Teddy slapped his face in disappointment. "So none of us have anything to eat then?"

Gordie shifted around on his feet a little as he shook his head- Chris, Vern, and I doing the same.

"Damnit!" Teddy yelled. "So what're we supposed to do, eat our feet?"

My stomach quietly rumbled right on cue as I remembered I may have to live on a single peach for the next two days.

"Well, I brought somethin' else good, anyway." Vern reached into his shirt pocket, grinning like a little kid. He held up a thin white comb.

Teddy squinted at him. "What the hell is that?"

"Can we eat it?" I said, earning a chuckle from the others. "If we can't eat it, why-"
