Dear Diary,
For pretty much the rest of the trip back, we were quiet. I think we all knew why, but we never said it out loud.
We didn't talk to each other except for mere whispers on what turn we should take. All of us would grow quiet again after that.
About a half of a mile before we reached Castle Rock, we started to come out of our shells a bit more.
As we came through the thick forest we just passed through a couple days ago, I decided to carry out unfinished business.
"So, Gordie- when are you and Vern giving me the two bucks I deserve?"
Gordie sighed. "Later. At school probably."
Chris quietly laughed, looking between Gordie and I. "What are you guys talking about?"
"She made a bet that you wouldn't ask her out before the end of the trip." Gordie had a fair amount of attitude in his voice. "And you obviously didn't, so we owe her money-"
"Hold on, hold on, hold on." Chris interrupted, and his tone was serious. He almost sounded mad. "What? Why?"
Gordie and Vern stopped in their tracks, causing all the rest of us to stop too. They both looked like they just pissed their pants.
I began to laugh behind Chris, putting my hand in front of my face to muffle it.
Chris looked behind at me and winked over his shoulder.
I was confused, then. Why did he wink? What is that supposed to mean? Excuse me? My laugh cut off pretty quick.
Teddy stuck his thumb in Gordie and Vern's direction, before trying to proceed walking on. "These two dorks thought that you had a crush on her, probably."
Chris laughed, and closed his eyes in a way I thought translated to: 'I knew this would happen you damn idiots.'
I was giggling to myself, even harder than before. I clenched my hand which made it sting, but I couldn't contain my laughter at how scared the other boys looked; how confused I was- and the anticipation of what was going to happen next.
"Well, you guys can sort all that out." I said, and put my hands in between Gordie and Chris. I was pushing my way between them to continue walking ahead with Teddy.
"Alright, well she can take that how she wants." Chris looked after me, and I stopped in my own tracks.
I turned around and squinted at him, gripping the strap of my sleeping bag tightly. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Chris smiled in the way I always loved-
Loved? Not loved! Don't think that-
"I won't deny that, or say it's true... but... just know that I'm up for it."
