After we left, barely any conversation ensued between Chris and I. I didnt want to ruin what had been the last time we spoke with jokes or other stupid things. I wanted to savor it for as long as I could. It made me wish more had happened with him that night-
Wait, what? You don't like him.... do you? Of course not...!
Quite a few hours of walking in the hot sun passed, and the rest of the gang started to speak up again, since we were all so excited about finding Ray, being on TV, getting famous, the works.
"Yeah, I think he's a dog." I said, my eyes flickering between Gordie and Chris. I'd finally had enough time to let the moment sit in my mind.
Chris glanced at me, a bit of surprise in his face. It was the first time he'd heard me speak since the sunrise.
Chris scoffed as he stepped on a few branches, making them crack. "But Pluto is a dog and he doesn't do all the stuff Goofy does."
"He could be a different breed." Gordie interrupted.
"True that." I mused, and pointed my thumb at him in agreement.
Teddy and Vern stopped in front of us, making the three of us stop abruptly, and walk around them to stand in a straight line.
"What did ya stop for- ohhhh..." I looked at the giant pond in horror. It almost seemed to bubble like a witch's brew, the green color to match.
As we all stood together, thinking about how we would get across this small pond in front of us seemed to be a feat.
"What are we gonna do about this?" Vern asked, drawing our attention.
Teddy chuckled, "We could use you as a raft!"
"That's so funny, I forgot to laugh!" Vern sarcastically replied.
Chris stepped behind me and broke a huge branch from the tree behind us, making a huge snapping sound and making me jump.
He stuck it blindly in the water, making little drops fleck my legs, until he spoke up. "It's not that deep. We can just walk across."
We all nodded silently as we walked together, a stench of ancient swamp filling my nostrils and my skin getting goosebumps from the cold.
Then, that feeling took my entire body, making my hair wet and my body tremble and my ears ring with screams of shock and the gurgle of disturbed water.
I guess it was that deep, and walking across was a total mistake. Whoops?
I gasped for air as I pushed wet strands of hair out of my face, everyone laughing about how stupid we were.
"I told you so." Vern grunted, making me laugh. His hair was stuck completely to his forehead, making him look like a wet pageboy.
I snatched my bandana off of my head, as it only dripped cold water onto my neck and would ruin any chance my hair had of drying slightly normal. The boys would get to see my beach waves, instead.
