After a while and a pit(ss) stops, Chris went to go talk to the other guys, but Gordie hung back with me this time.

"I think I've found a new pet peeve..." Gordie began, sounding choked up.

"Yeah?" I said gently.

"Yeah... people tend to judge other people a lot, ya know? Cause there's a lot more than what's first... there. I hate that."

I smiled, getting a clue to their previous mystery conversation. "Tell me about it..."

By this time, his hair that was gelled in the morning had entirely dissipated off with sweat. He had shaggy, straight brown bangs that covered his forehead instead. They looked unusual on him.

"Like with Chris- he's nice to like, everyone he meets, ya' know? He saw a kid the other day that scraped his knee. He was around five or something." Gordie shuffled his feet as he walked, now. He pointed at Chris ahead, who was ahead of us. "And he just got down on the curb with him, and told him all about Huck Finn on TV and all those other shows. By the time he was done, the kid forgot that he even scraped his knee anymore."

I laughed for a moment at the thought. "I remember that."

Silence for a while between us. The other boys discussed some baseball. After a while, we came across a bridge that look pretty frightening, considering that you could fall off of it at any moment. But we'll find a way- we always do.

That went right over the widest part of the Royal River itself, the river which ran right next to the supposed tracks where Ray had died. It had train tracks laid all across the top of it, end to end.

We all seemed pretty frustrated about whether we should go across this or not, but none of us said a word.

"When is the next train due?" Vern asked quietly.

"We could go down to the Route 136 bridge, but that's five miles down the river." Chris suggested, completely ignoring Vern.

Teddy intervened: "No shit, Chambers. Of course it's five miles down the river. You guys really wanna walk five miles down the river and back? Cause I know I don't!"

"But Teddy, where do we go if a train comes?" I objected. "I don't wanna be splattered on the train as a hood ornament!"

"Jump." Teddy replied obviously. "Duh."

"Teddy that's a hundred feet." Gordie said plainly.

Teddy shook his head. "You guys can go around, I'm crossing here. While you kids are draggin' your candy asses halfway across the state and back, I'll be waiting for you. It's your choice."

"I think you're forgetting something!" I huffed, backing away from the edge of the cliff.

Gordie shook his head. "No, what?"
