The darkness of Ray's room is slowly being pushed away by the pale light dripping in from the window. It's the soft glow that can only come from the morning sun, and while Ray doesn't know exactly what time it is, she can tell that it's early because she can hear her parents shuffling up and down the stairs.
Luke had slept over, after Ray's family and friends stuck them with the job of being a two-person cleanup crew. They'd finished by sundown and went inside for a nap, but woke up at one in the morning, so Ray's parents let him stay.
She'd been nervous, at first, about the idea. As she'd taken a shower and brushed her teeth, she told herself that she'd slept at his house before, and this isn't any different. She supposed that it felt different because it was her house this time, and they'd be in her bed. Luke probably felt the same way at first, she'd thought to herself.
They didn't even get to sleep, so she really felt silly for being anxious. They'd talked, about the cookout, and briefly about school, until now.
"Luke," Ray nudges the boy next to her, turning on her side and reaching to put an arm over his middle. He hums, eyes closed. "Luke." She tries again, tapping his side.
His eyes flutter open and he brings his gaze to her. Ray rests her cheek on his shoulder, waiting for him to give a proper response. "Yeah?"
Ray thought about this—every day since the day they met—when they first got into bed, but she couldn't build up the courage to ask. But, now that their lids are drooping, and they're slightly out of it from lack of sleep, and she's holding him, she feels she can ask now.
"What do you look like?"
Luke blinks, then puts his arm around her and pulls her closer. She shifts so she can comfortably lay her head on his chest. "What do I look like?"
"I just wanna know, just in case I never get to see for myself." Ray shrugs, now toying with his necklace. It feels like a weird shape, but it's cool to the touch and has interesting angles and points that Ray likes to run her fingers over.
Luke doesn't know where to begin, feeling a bit put on the spot. Ray hopes he tells her, because some days she'll picture him as different people each time he talks. She knows that he has a lip ring, and that his hair is soft in between her knuckles and under her nails, but she doesn't know what color either of them are—not that the color of the lip ring matters per se.
"Well, I have blue eyes. Blond hair. Hitler would be all over me." Luke says, turning a lopsided smile up at the ceiling when Ray giggles. She's trying to imagine him and she's almost frustrated with the amount of celebrities that she thinks of instead of normal people.
"I've been told that I have a cute nose." He continues after a moment of silence, consciously touching his face. Ray smiles, not even really piecing together a guy in her head at this point and just remembering the details.
She'll tell him that his eyes are like the ocean, even if she can't see them. She'll tell him that his hair is harboring the sunlight, that his nose is the cutest nose on the planet, that she doesn't need to see him to know that he's attractive. Not that him being attractive matters either, but she just knows he is. And now that she's been given ammo, she won't let him forget it.
"I bet your nose is adorable," She mumbles into his shirt, hiding her dorky grin in there too, while she's at it. Luke chuckles and Ray feels a bout of word vomit coming on, but she doesn't bother trying to hold it down. "Will you be my boyfriend?"
Ray lays very still, thinking she's messed something up—which, again, very silly of her, she knows. She doesn't think Luke doesn't like her, but there's always something nerve-wracking about asking someone to be your boyfriend or girlfriend. Especially since Ray randomly blurted it out while they were in the middle of a conversation.
