"Are you ready?" Hoseok, your mentor, asked as he helped you secure your elbow gears. You just nodded, though deep inside, you were freaking out big time. Yes, you already had a lot of practice in motor racing with Hoseok, and you were confident of what he taught you because he has won a lot of cups after all. He was probably the best mentor anybody could have.
Which is also basically why you felt so nervous to race against him, even if it was just a practice race.
"Go easy on me okay," You squeaked, making Hoseok laugh.
"We won't see your potential if I go easy on you. Don't be afraid to push yourself to your limits, ________." He said reassuringly and stroked your hair. "Always remember: drive and set your heart on fire."
You took a deep breath, then let it all out at once. You closed your eyes and jumped up and down while shaking your hands, trying your best to release all the tension in your veins.
Hoseok is right. Racing has always been your passion, and in order to be the best racer you can become, you have to always be ready to give your best. Just like what he once said:
"If you love what you do, it won't matter if you win or lose. What matters is you gave all your best."
"I'll ask again, _______. Are you ready?" He asked in a quite comical way, even placing his hand near his ear as he waited for a response.
"Yes!" You yelled back. He scrunched up his nose and pretended not to hear anything.
"What's that? I can't hear you!"
"HELL YEAH!" You screamed, as you felt like something ignited in your heart. It suddenly gave you energy and confidence, making you break into a huge grin.
"That's my girl!" Hoseok said as he reached out to cup your cheeks. "Someday, you're going to be the next motor racing champion. You'll beat all the guys' asses out there."
You laughed at his statement, and he handed you your helmet while he had this challenging look in his eyes.
"Now buckle up. I won't go easy on you." He winked before putting on his own helmet, then walked towards his motorcycle. Chuckling, you shook your head as you secured the helmet on your head.
Oh it is on.
When finally on the starting line, both of you were staring up at the indication lights, waiting for it to turn green. Despite of the loud roars of your motorcycles, you could still hear the loud thumps of your heartbeat as if you were already in an official competition. Then you heard the familiar warning beeps, and as soon as you saw the light turn green, the rest of the world seemed to pass by at light speed.
As expected, in the blink of an eye, Hoseok was ahead of you by a few meters. You clenched your teeth and slowly increased your speed, catching up to him little by little. Just then, both of you leaned at a sharp 45 degree as you reached a curve, and you could almost feel the asphalt slightly grazing against your leg gear. Another curve on the opposite way appeared right after, giving you the inner lane which was a huge advantage.
You saw Hoseok glance at you as you got ahead of him, making you grin. You abruptly sped up to your max speed, catching him off guard and leaving him further behind you.
"Just one more curve," you said to yourself. "Just one more curve and I'll get the free lunch he promised if I win."
As you neared the final curve of the course, Hoseok was hot on your tail and was trying his best to steal your place in the inner lane. So you made sure to get as close to the edge as possible to prevent him from getting through. You glanced at your side mirror to see him furiously shaking his head.
Ha, he probably didn't expect you to beat him in your first race together.
You hit the curve and as usual, sharply leaned towards the asphalt. But then, your knee bumped into the border lane because you were too close, making your front wheel lift up ever so slightly.
But that was enough to send your bike lose momentum and spin uncontrollably.
You quickly jumped off your bike before you get dragged with it, sending you rolling many times far across the grass. You stopped just in time as you heard your bike crash from the distance, and for a moment, the world seemed to turn silent as you blinked several times to stop your eyes from spinning. You saw Hoseok crouch over you, his helmet off.
"_________!!!!" He frantically called out as he took your helmet off for you. You groaned and squinted as the harsh sunlight hit your eyes. "________, can you hear me?"
"Ughhh stop spitting all over me..." you groaned, and Hoseok laughed in relief as he pulled you in for a hug.
"You pabo, you were too close to the edge. You almost gave me a frickin heart attack, _______." He whispered, still not breaking off the hug. You could feel his heart pumping hard against your chest, and you softened, realizing that he really was scared for your life. You sighed and wrapped your arm around his neck.
"I'm sorry," you mumbled. Hoseok slightly pulled away to look at you, his face very close to yours. It surprised you that he was crying. You slightly gasped and cupped his cheeks. "Hoseok? Why are you crying? I'm okay. Really."
He just softly laughed, but still not breaking eye contact with you. And much to your surprise, he leaned in to press his lips against yours, gently cupping your cheeks in the process. You were caught off guard, but eventually melted into the kiss because honestly speaking, you've always admired Hoseok. He was kind, funny, and very passionate about what he does, and you'd be lying if you said you didn't find him attractive. He was a complete package, and here you are, being the very lucky girl that's kissing him.
"Don't ever scare me like that again," he mumbled against your lips. Then he softly pecked you another time. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
You just smiled and kissed him once again, and a few moments later, both of you were laughing. You didn't know exactly why you were laughing, but anyway, Hoseok laid down on the grass as well, staring up at the sky beside you. He reached out for your hand and brought it up to his lips to kiss it.
"When I said push yourself to your limits, I didn't mean it like 'push yourself to your limits to the point that you almost die'." He sighed, making you laugh. You leaned on your elbow to look down at him, watching how the sun beautifully illuminated his skin.
"Lesson learned, sir. Don't worry, I won't try to kill myself the next time." You flopped back down the grass as you sighed. "Too bad I didn't beat you, though."
"Don't worry, I'll still treat you to lunch." He pointed a finger towards you, looking at you in a challenging way. "But the next time we race, you owe me lunch."
"Deal." You nodded and returned the same look.
Looks like the real race has just started.

[A/N]: I was undecided at first if Hoseokie should be a car or a motor racer, but then I thought he fits motor racing better. Because motor bikes are cooler. And hotter.
