*~Mariana's POV~*
"Hello?" I called out once I was back up in the attic. I had closed the attic door, but I tried to be quiet so that Mom, Dad, and Erc couldn't hear me.
It was just like last night all over again, except this time, it was daylight and I did not have a flashlight with me.
Wait...
It was daylight.
'Did he only come out at night?' I wondered.
I had absolutely no idea, but it was a possibility. In most things that I've seen or read about ghosts, they normally only came out at night.
I mean, I knew it was really stereotypical to think that, but it wasn't exactly impossible.
"Ghost boy?" I called out, looking around the attic room.
"Niall?" This time, I used his first name. Maybe he would come out since I used it...
Nope.
No response.
Was he even up here anymore?
Or did I...did I actually manage to scare a ghost off?
Was that even remotely possible?
*~Niall's POV~*
I watched the human girl as she called out for me. I was hiding behind a stack of boxes in the corner, peering around them to watch her call out and look for me.
I didn't know why I was hiding because even if I was standing right in front of her, she wouldn't be able to see me unless I wanted her to.
But it was just...
I was shy.
Scared, even.
I was always pretty shy and even quiet in my human life, but...I was the ghost here, and I was the one who was scared.
It was supposed to be the other way around. That's how it was supposed to work.
SHE was supposed to be scared of ME.
'No wonder everyone had hated me in my human life' I thought sadly to myself As the realization struck me.
I was pathetic.
A baby.
I was a same to the ghost world. An absolute joke.
Other ghosts probably laughed at me behind my back...I wouldn't be surprised.
A coward in life, a coward in death...
"Well...I guess I'll be going then." The girl called out, surprising me.
She was leaving?
For some strange reason...I didn't want her to.
But maybe it'd be better for her if she left...I was a ghost, and she probably had living people problems to deal with that were way more important than me.
"Wait."
Oh...
Crap.
'Was that me?' I wondered in horror.
Did I just actually call out to her? I didn't even realize it! I didn't even hear myself talk!
Once the girl turned, searching the attic with her eyes, the sudden realization set in.
I had called out to her.
"Where are you?" She called out.
Well...
There was no going back now.
"I'm here." I stated, before stepping out from behind the boxes.
I was facing her, but her face was blank. And then, just moments later, her expression turned to one of confusion.
"Where are you?" She asked.
...Oh.
It was just then when I realized that I hadn't materialized, manifested. She couldn't see me.
If I could blush, I would have.
Closing my eyes, I managed to gather up enough energy...
I heard her gasp and opened my eyes.
She was staring at me, her eyes wide.
"Y-you're real," she whispered, still staring at me.
I didn't know how to reply so I just nodded my head. "Yeah."
I watched her face. Her expression changed from onie of excitement to one of horror.
"You're a ghost!" Her voice was terror stricken as she backed away from me.
"Please," I begged, taking a step forward. "You don't have to be afraid of me."
"But you're a-"I cut her off.
"I know what I am, but please. You don't have to be afraid of me, I won't hurt you. I promise."
She continued to stare at me, remaining silent.
"And besides," I continued, smiling a little bit. "Only people who believe in ghosts can see me. You can see me, but I know that your parents and brother don't believe in the paranormal. Which means they wouldn't be able to see me and that would give them even more of a reason not to believe you."
"Oh..." I could hear the shakiness in her voice as it drifted off.
It was silent. I didn't know what to say...
And then my big mouth struck again.
"I haven't talked to an actual human in over fifty years!" I blurted out. The girl stared at me. "I try to, but people always move away because they're scared."
She just looked confused. "Oh...well...um..."
As soon as I heard her response, I felt like smacking myself.
'Way to go Horan. As if you didn't freak her out enough already." I yelled at myself.
"I'm sorry." I apologized.
"Um...it's fine. Listen, I have to go back downstairs. But I'll be back later, okay?" She motioned over to the stairwell.
I nodded. Just as she turned to leave, I called out, "What's your name?"
"Mariana," came the response.
Mariana...
It was a beautiful name.
I watched as she descended down the stairs and listened as the attic door opened and closed.
Just as she left, the realization hit me.
"What have I done?!" I groaned, being sure not to be too loud.
I couldn't make contact with a living human!
They were probably already after me...
