"Hi Riley." Miles's sexy voice broke the silence. Riley swallowed hard and breathed in.
"Hi Miles." Riley didn't know what else to say to him. She was so tounge tied.
As soon as Miles smiled at her, Riley's heart went nuts. She didn't understand this reaction that he brought out in her. They ate in silence for a coupld of minutes. Finally, Miles broke the silence. "Ok, if you're not going to talk then I will." She could tell by his tone that he was just messing around. His tone got a little more serious. "Tell me about yourself."
Riley looked up from her soup. She didn't like to talk about herself. She decided to tell him the basics. "Well, I'm 20. I love working here and I'm currently studying to become a registered nurse. Oh, I also have a wonderful boyfriend, Mike." Riley saw the obvious dissapointment on Miles's face when she told him about Mike. She didn't want him to ask any questions about her so she kept the conversation going. "Your turn. Tell me about yourself."
A strange look passed across Miles's face. It was gone as fast as it came so Riley didn't have time to process it. "Well, I'm 22. And I just graduated from college and I am a registered nurse. I like it here so far but this is my first day here so I can't tell you for sure. Oh, and I am currently single." Riley smiled at the way he told her everything about himself that she had told him about herself.
They didn't talk about much else after their brief introductions. Niether one of them wanted to say anything that would cause further questions or deep conversations. Riley finished her soup and got up to leave. She was going to say goodbye but Miles spoke first. "It was nice talking to you Riley, I'm really looking foward to getting to know you better." His comment caught her off guard but her body responeded right away. With her heart racing and her hands shaing, Riley quickly said her goodbye and left.
She stopped in the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror. She was pretty, even she could admit that. With her dark brown hair and her big dark eyes, Riley was the spittng image of the pictures she had of her mother. She splashed some water and looked back at her reflection. Riley let out a deep sigh. "Oh Mamma, I really need your help right now." She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. Riley thought of her mom every day of her life. She didn't like to talk about her parents or her past because it only made her upset. After taking a deep breath, she dried off her face and got ready to go home to see Mike. Her boyfriend Mike. Not Miles. Mike.
Riley checked her cell phone. No missed calls and no text messages. She sighed. Her and Mike had been dating since high school. When she first started working late shifts at the nursing home he would always text her just to make sure she knew to call him when she got home so he knew she was safe. Now, it was 1:00 in the morning and there was nothing. Riley started to walk across the dark parking lot when she heard footsteps behind her. A panicked feeling immedietally set in. Before she could get herself to worked up, Miles up next to her.
"Hey I thought that was you." He smiled at her as if he hadn't just given her a mini heart attack moment. "I can already recognize your beautiful self anywhere."
Riley sighed. He couldn't flirt with her. She didn't want him to flirt with her not only because she had Mike, but also because she didn't want to admit to herself that she liked it. "Miles, I'm just going to stop something before it starts. You can't flirt with me. I have a boyfriend."
Miles laughed, a deep velvety sound that made Riley smile. "Maybe I wasn't flirting, maybe I was just complementing you. Did you ever think of that?"
Normally that would have embarrassed her, but Riley knew for a fact that he was not just complementing her. "Well, thank you for the complement. But I think we both know that you were not just complementing me."
When they reached their cars, they stopped. Miles turned to face Riley. He brushed a stray hair out of her face. "You know what Riley? I really really wish that you didn't have a boyfriend. Because I can already tell that you are someone that I really want to get to know better." He was whispering in her ear and between his touch and his breath blowing across her face, Riley was shaking so hard she was surprised she could still stand.
Riley took a step back. "Miles. We just met a few hours ago and I do have a boyfriend. So we can be friends, but nothing more." Then, she unlocked her car, got in, and drove away from the nursing home and away from Miles. As much as she tried, even Riley couldn't convince herself that she didn't feel something of Miles. Even if they has just met, she couldn't deny there was something there.
When Riley woke up the next morning, she had a text from Mike. 'Hey babe, I know that we were supposed to go out tonight. But I can't. Love you.' Riley just looked at her phone. Really? He had gotten all worked up yesterday when she had had to go to work and now he was cancelling on her. And he wasn't even going to tell her why.
Riley called Mike only to get his voicemail. She rolled her eyes and put her phone down. She had to work again today, but only for the afternoon. Her and Mike were going to have supper since they hadn't spent much time together. Riley just sighed and went to get ready for work. As much as she loved her job, she loved Mike more. But today, she was looking foward to going to work. And she knew deep down, that that feeling had something to do with Miles.
