There was a loud knocking on the door twenty minutes later. Riley opened the door to see Mike standing there smiling but she could see the concern in his eyes. "Hey babe." He greeted as he leaned in to kiss her. Riley gave him a quick kiss and when she pulled back, she wrapped her arms around his middle and burried her face in his chest. She breathed in his scent and wrapped her arms tighter around him. Riley didn't want to talk, she just wanted to hold him. He wrapped his arms around her and held her for a few minutes until he finally pulled away and looked down at her. "Are you ok honey?"
She looked up at him. "We need to talk." Riley grabbed Mike's hand and lead him over to her couch. They both sat down and out of habit, Mike pulled her back to his chest.
"Riley, what's going on? You can tell me." She pulled away from him so she could look into his eyes.
"Mike, I have something to tell you and you're not going to like it." She stopped and took a deep breath. Her hands were shaking and she knew that he probably would break up with her after she told him.
"Honey, you're not breaking up with me are you?" Mike turned to her with a look on his face that broke her heart.
"No, I'm not breaking up with you." She was actually hoping that he wouldn't break up with her. "Okay. A few months ago, a guy started working with me at the nursing home. His name is Miles and we hit it off right away. We became friends and started hanging out. While you were in Seattle, Mr. Harrison fell and hurt himself. I was an emotional wreck, so Miles drove me to the hospital to see him. By the time we left the hospital, I was crying so hard that I was almost sick. Miles drove me home and bought supper for me. He ended up staying at my apartment. I woke up in the middle of the night and he came into my room to comfort me. He ended up sleeping in my bed with me. Before he left the next day, we kissed. That's it though, we didn't do anything else." Riley looked down at her hands. She swiped a tear that she hadn't even realized was falling and looked at Mike.
He was squeezing his hands together and looking down at the carpet. He turned and looked at Riley. His face held a mixture of pain and anger. "So, you kissed another guy and he stayed with you at your apartment and in your bed while I was in Seattle." He tooke a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair.
"Mike, I'm so sorry. It will never happen again I promise." Riley vowed to herself that she would keep that promise.
Mike turned and looked at her. "Riley. I have a lot to think about, but I'm sure we can get past this. Was that the only time anything happened between you two?"
His question hit Riley like a ton of bricks. She knew she wasn't telling him everything. Miles had taken her out lots of times and he head slept in her room more than once. They had kissed several times. Using all of the strength she had left, Riley looked at him and nodded. A nod that represented the silent lie to the man that she was going to spend the rest of her life with.
Mike leaned in and kissed Riley like he was trying to prove that he was better than Miles. He pulled away and looked into her eyes. "I love you Riley. And I forgive you. I'm not saying that what you did was ok, because it's not at all ok. I want to spend the rest of my life with you and I'm not going to let some guy stand in the way of that. You said it only happened once and I believe that it won't happen again."
Riley looked into his eyes. She saw hurt and more love then she ever knew possible. She knew that Mike loved her and she loved him back. It killed her to know that she had lied to him. She felt extremely guilty. It made her feel even more guilty to know that she wasn't 100% commited to Mike the he was commited to her. There was part of her that wanted Miles. There was part of her that had feelings for Miles. Feelings that got stronger and stronger every time she saw him.
She had to tell Mike. She knew that she had to tell him. She couldn't let Mike believe that her and Miles was a kiss that only happened once. Riley opened her mouth to tell him but before she could, she was met by Mike's mouth on her's. His kisses were urgent and rushed. His hands where eveywhere at once. Riley wrapped her arms around her neck and tangled her hands in his hair. While he kissed her, she couldn't help but notice that it wasn't quite as nice as when Miles kissed her.
Riley woke up the next morning, wrapped in Mike's arms. The night before had been one that Riley would have liked to forget. For Mike, it was a night full of love. For Riley, it was one full of guilt. They had ended up in her bedroom and all she had wanted to do was tell him that she lied to him. She didn't want a marriage based on lies and she was sure that Mike didn't want one either. Riley was pulled out of her thoughts when she felt Mike's lips on her neck. "Good morning beautiful. Sleep well?" He smiled at her.
She smiled and nodded. "I had a great night last night." Another lie.
Mike laughed. "I did too. Listen babe, I would love to stay here with you and have one of our wonderful lazy days that I love so much, but I have to go to work and I'm already 10 minutes late. Riley looked at her clock to see that it was past 11. She was shocked. She never slept that late.
"That's ok, I need to get this place cleaned up anyways. I also need to work on some more wedding plans." Mike laced his fingers with Riley's.
"Just thing honey, in a few short months, we'll be a married couple." She sighed. Mike got up and got dressed. "Goodbye Riley, I love you."
"Bye babe, I love you too." He left her room and she heard her apartment door close behind him.
Eventually, she got up and showered. After getting dressed, Riley decided to sit down and figure out some of the small details of their wedding. She already had the big things planned. They had a church and a venue for the reception. She had her colors picked out. They knew what kind of cake they would eat and what champaigne they would drink. They were getting married a month before Riley's birthday, so she would be 21 by then. She had her wedding dress paid for, now all she had to do was pick out flowers and and a DJ. As excited as she was, she couldn't help but notice the little voice in the back of her head screaming at her to think her wedding through.
The next few months passed quickly. Riley went to work and kept up with her school work. She saw Miles and they started talking again a few weeks after their fight. They went out a couple of times, but they didn't kiss eachother. Before Riley knew it, it was her 21st birthday.
