Chapter Two
“Raine.” I said quietly, as I walked into the room next door to mine, carrying Ella. It had been a day since I'd given birth to her, and I had promised to come and visit my new friend.
“Hey, Meadow,” She grinned back. She was sitting in her bed wearing the exact same hideous hospital robe that I was wearing. She looked exhausted, despite the fact she was still smiling, and in her arms she was holding a bundle in a blue blanket, “Who's this little one?” She then asked, pointing to the tiny baby I was holding in a pink blanket in my arms.
“Ella,” I told her with a nod, “Ella Raine Connor.” I informed her, and watched as her mouth fell open in surprise at her middle name.
“R-Raine?” She chocked, “Is that just a coincidence or what?”
“Nope,” I smiled, shaking my head, “I was supposed to be giving her away, but you made me see that I could never do that. I didn't have a name for her though, and this just came to me.”
“Well, it's beautiful,” She smiled in reply, stroking Ella's cheek, “She's adorable, Meadow, she looks just like you.”
“Apart from her eyes,” I sighed, looking down in her deep green eyes that were just opening, “Anyway,” I shrugged, changing the subject, “Who's this?” I asked, pulling down the blanket gently so I could see the face of her baby.
“Benjamin Michael Balewa,” She told me, proudly, “Ben for short. And Michael after her daddy.”
“That's a lovely name,” I smiled, looking down at the sleeping dark skinned and dark haired little boy, he was definitely the spitting image of Raine, apart from the fact his small amount of hair was in tight curls, while Raine's hair was straight, “So is Ben's daddy not in the picture anymore?”
“No,” She sighed sadly, looking down at her son and tightly her grip slightly on him, “Michael was all I had, but he died in a car crash before I even got to tell him that he was going to be a daddy..”
“Oh,” I breathed, not quite knowing what to say, “I'm so sorry...”
“It's fine,” She smiled weakly, blinking back a few tears, “It's just... He was all I had! We were together for three years, and he'd always stuck by me when my family was giving me hell. But, I'll survive...”
“Michael would've been proud of you,” I assured her, wrapping one arm around her shoulders, “You're doing a great thing, y'know?”
“I guess so,” She laughed, “He looks just like his daddy, it's painful at times...”
“Really?” I frowned, “I thought he looked like you?”
“He's got my nose,” She nodded, “Poor boy! But he's got his daddy's curly hair, and his eyes. He's sleeping now, but he's got gorgeous black eyes.”
“He's adorable,” I nodded in agreement, “So when was he born?” I asked, wondering if him and Ella would have the same birthday.
“Just after midnight, early hours of this morning,” She told me, “He took ages to come out, I was in labour for over twelve hours!”
“Oh wow,” I breathed, “Ella came quite quick. I was only in labour for three hours. I had her at 3:15 PM on 27th August.”
“Aww, Ben's is the 28th!” She exclaimed, “They're going to be the youngest when they start school, aren't they?”
“Oh yeah...” I nodded. My birthday was in October, so I'd always been one of the oldest.
“Meadow!” I heard someone call, and turned around to see my grandma standing in the doorway, with her hands on her hips, “I've been looking for you! The nurse wants you back to your room to rest!”
