Their eyes met, holding the other's gaze persistently. The atmosphere was

pressing, unanswered questions lingering in the air.

Alice's eyes were like bloodied uncut diamonds, hard and cold as they

attempted to silence Serenity. Everything about her told him not to ask, not

to force her.

Serenity stared right back, his amber eyes remaining firm in his need to

know. He refused to be kept in the dark any longer, refused to allow himself

to be strung along without any explanation.

Finally, Alice sighed, her slender form screaming with fatigue and plain

weariness.

"What do you want to know?" Alice inquired quietly.

A question was immediately shot off in an urgent tone, "What's wrong with

you? All the mood swings, sudden attitude changes?"

"I..." Alice hesitated, and Serenity frowned, pinning her with a

don't-you-dare-lie look. "When I was seventeen, I was diagnosed with

schizophrenia."

An almost amused smile tugged at the corner of her mouth when she saw

Serenity's puzzled look.

Alice stood up, dusting her clothes off, "That means split personality,

Seren."

The thick, sooty eyelashes that framed her dark eyes shielded her from

Serenity's shocked look.

"I am her, and she is me. We're two minds in one body," Alice announced.

"Together, we are 'Alice'. However, this body was mine first."

Serenity was perplexed, "Why didn't you tell anyone, then?"

"Do you really expect me to be believed? I, Alice Nightray, who have hurt so

many, is not to be blamed because I have a split personality?" Alice raised

an eyebrow.

Serenity glanced away. She sure had a point.

He counted the questions off his fingers, "Then, when does she surface? How

often? Are there limitations? Can you remember that she does?"

"That's random. When she comes out, I mean. I have no way of predicting it."

Alice moved around the living room, rearranging things. She motioned with

her hands, "In my head, it's like we're standing in a lake. She forcefully

takes my body over. I view all her actions like it's a movie. If I fight, I

can take back my body for a while, but it's hard. She's stronger.

Limitations? None."

Alice sighed, her face twisting in a grimace.

Serenity mentally went through the events of the last time the other Alice

had appeared.

"Hey, who's Eida?" Serenity stood as well, stretching his cramped legs.

Alice froze for a second, "Eida... was my older sister."

"Is she important to you?" Serenity lit up a cigarette.

Alice's glare was solid and cutting, "Don't press it. I'm only telling you

this because I owe you since I hurt Rillianne. You have no right to pry in

to my past."

Serenity paused with the glowing cigarette poised at his mouth, surprised at

her suddenly defensive attitude. He narrowed his eyes, blocking off his

emotions with a calculative gaze.

That's right, he was being too relaxed around Alice. After all, she was

still his enemy.
