Austin's POV

San Jose, CA

I stared at the divorce papers in defeat. This was the hardest thing for me to do. After catching my wife of two years cheating on me, this had to be done. I loved her, but I couldn’t let her do something like this to me.

I slowly signed the papers, sighing as I felt a weight being lifted off of my shoulders. It was finally done, but all I wanted to do was mourn in self-pity and depression.

I made my way into the kitchen and looked under the sink for something to drink. My alcohol was getting sparse, so I grabbed my car keys and wallet and made my way outside to my car to make an alcohol run.

When I turned my car on, Billy Talent came blasting through the speakers. This made me think of the band I was thinking of forming. I wasn’t totally sure on a band name, but me and my buddies, Jaxin and Alan were almost to the point of formation.

Music was my escape. But I think in a way music was everyone’s escape. Listening to music and listening to lyrics that explained the exact problem that you were going through makes you feel like you’re not alone.

As I pulled up to the liquor store I was finally starting to feel more laid back and ready to face humanity. There was still a hole burning through my heart that I could only think to mend with alcohol.

I stepped into the store and grabbed a cart, because I knew I would need it. I grabbed two bottles of Jameson, a bottle of wine, and three six packs. That would do for now, I guess.

When I stepped into the imported wine aisle to get to the check out, someone stepped in front of me at the other end of the aisle.

“Whoa man, rough night?” I asked with a laugh, examining his tattered clothing and baseball cap covering his face.

They just moaned at me and limped closer to me.

Something about with guy felt weird so I turned around and made my way down a different aisle, finally getting to the check out where there was one person working.

I began putting my alcohol on the table when the employee stopped me.

“Just take it. It’s free,” he said, panic clear in his voice and facial expression.

I groaned. Stuff like this happened to me all of the time because of my tattoos and nose ring. Frankly, it annoyed the hell out of me. I was never that quick to judge people but people were pretty quick to judge me. “Look man, I’m not going to rob you. Here’s my wallet. I’m just a normal guy buying some alcohol,” I explained, showing him my wallet that was already stashed with about $100. Five twenty dollar bills, it wasn’t that scary.

“No, no. Just take it. We’re going out of business anyways,” he said, backing away from me and going into the backroom and locking himself in.

I shrugged and took my alcohol back, making my way back to my car. It was their loss if they thought I was going to rob them or whatever.

Putting the alcohol into my trunk, I heard the sound of footsteps running over to me. I turned around and saw a guy with some sort of skunk hair coming over to me.

“This was bad idea,” he kept muttering to himself.

“You ok, man?” I asked, closing my trunk and disregarding the shopping cart by pushing it away.

“Have you ever heard of zombies?” He asked.

I shrugged. “Who hasn’t heard of zombies?”

The guy smiled a bit and stuck his hand out. “Hi, my name is Jack Barakat and we are currently in a zombie apocalypse.”

“I’m sorry?” I asked, confused as I shook his hand.

“I know this may seem confusing, but zombies are real and they are currently infesting the United States and probably some other countries. I’m from Maryland and they were there, and now they’re here,” he explained.

“You’re insane.”

“I am, but not about this.”

“How am I supposed to believe you? I literally just met you two seconds ago.” Something about this guy was very strange, and somehow I needed to get to the bottom of this.

“Do you have somewhere we could talk? ...In private.”
