Oli's POV
Sheffield, England
“Oliver, I have some news that I need to share with you via the government. They’re moving the queen out of England because of a fatal disease that’s going around. I recommend you and Hannah go vacationing for a few months as this all blows over,” my assistant, Jennie said to me, reading off of a clipboard.
“What kind of disease?” I asked. It must’ve been pretty powerful to blow the queen out of the country.
“No one knows yet. But it’s mostly being contracted by teenagers and it’s causing them to be fatally sick. The hospital got twenty calls in the last hour from parents saying their children have become unresponsive. There’s not much news after that,” she explained, keeping her serious, business-like composure.
I nodded. “Ok, get me two tickets for the earliest flight to Hollywood. You can’t go wrong with a surprise vacation.” I sprung out of my chair and made my way upstairs to mine and Hannah’s apartment.
“Hey babe,” Hannah shouted from the couch, looking over her shoulder and smiling at me. “How was work?”
“It was fine,” I answered, collapsing on the couch beside her while wrapping my arms around her thin waist. “What do you think about going on a vacation to Hollywood?”
She smiled. “Seriously?” She asked.
I nodded. “I figured we could take a bit of a break from the store and travel to Hollywood.” I wasn’t planning on telling her that we were escaping a fatal disease because I didn’t want her to worry about anyone.
She crashed her lips onto mine. “I think that’s a fantastic idea,” she murmured when she pulled away.
I felt my phone vibrate and I checked the text, seeing that it was from Jennie.
Jennie: First class plane leaves at 10pm tonight. Your tickets are waiting at the front desk at the airport.
“We better get packing because our flight leaves in three hours!” I enthused, lifting her up and carrying her to our bedroom so we could get packing.
After the long flight to Hollywood, Hannah and I got our rental car and got into our hotel. We laid on our bed, completely exhausted. I checked my Facebook and noticed I had a message from my best friend, Matt Nicholls.
Matt Nicholls: Something is seriously wrong man.
Matt Nicholls: Rachel is dead.
My eyes widened as I read the last message he sent me. Rachel was his girlfriend, and there was no way she could be dead. I immediately told Matt to call me and seconds later, my phone started ringing.
“Matt, what happened?” I asked as I picked up.
“I came home from work and I found her passed out next to a bottle of pills. I immediately called the ambulance and as I was waiting for them to show up she started groaning at me. It was like she turned into an entirely different person. Her skin turned gray and... she tried to bite me,” Matt explained, his voice weak and shaky.
“Wait, she tried to bite you? I thought she was dead.” Something about this story wasn’t right.
“So did I! I had to lock myself in the bathroom because she was completely unresponsive to everything. It was like she was some sort of... zombie.”
“What kind of pills did she take?”
I heard Matt sniffle. “All the bottle said was Stage 1.”
“Matt, it’s so good to see you,” Hannah said, giving Matt a comforting hug when he showed up at our hotel the next day. I paid for him to fly down here so he could get away from memories of Rachel.
“Thanks Hannah,” Matt said quietly, also giving me a hug.
“Today is going to be the first day we’re actually going outside,” Hannah said with a bit of a laugh. She was totally fine with Matt being with us for our vacation. She was very understanding in that kind of way. “I was thinking today we could going shopping a bit, if you guys don’t mind.”
We smiled at her and walked with her outside to begin our shopping trip. I didn’t mind shopping, considering I had a clothing line. It was a good way to spot out the competition and their price points.
We were only walking for five minutes before we heard an ear-piercing shriek. We turned the corner and saw something towering over a person. I watched as the persons legs fell lifelessly, and then I ran towards the figure.
“Hey!” I yelled, trying to get its attention.
It looked up at me, blood and guts dripping off of their face. This thing was not an animal – but it wasn’t a human either. What the fuck was it supposed to be, then?
“Oli, get away!” Matt yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me back. “That’s exactly what Rachel looked like after she took those goddamn pills,” he explained.
“What’s it supposed to be?” Hannah asked, grasping my hand tightly.
It groaned at us and inched closer. I felt Matt let go of me and I was still completely frozen with Hannah next to me. The thing smelled rancid, like rotten flesh and blood.
Before I knew it, a crowbar came in contact with its face and its head completely fell off, the entire figure falling to the ground. I looked to Matt, who dropped the crowbar and looked at the thing more closely.
“Matt, what the hell?” Hannah yelled, letting go of me. “You could get us arrested!”
“Who’s going to arrest us, Hannah? Look around, there’s no one!” Matt countered, motioning around the empty street.
“W-where is everyone?” It suddenly sunk in as we realized the entire street was empty. No cars, no people, nothing.
All of a sudden one of the monitors that showed adverts changed to a video of someone.
“Attention, this is the mayor speaking. Everyone in the city of Hollywood must evacuate immediately. This is an order. We are-” the screen went black, and that’s when we were positive that something seriously was wrong.
