Jack's POV

San Jose, CA

Austin was a dickhead. That was the one thing I was absolutely sure on in life, everything else was uncertain. I had no fucking clue why the world was being infested with zombies, or why my mom kicked her own son out of the house, but I knew Austin was a dickhead.

After Austin kicked me out, I found an abandoned store to sleep in for the night. It was all great and stuff until the stupid place got swarmed with zombies. I don’t know what I would’ve done if those girls weren’t there to help me.

Once we all got into the car, it was awkward to say the least. I was sitting in the backseat with Jacklyne, and she was discussing how much fun it was to kill zombies. She seemed pretty cool, but I felt awkward because of Austin. He was quiet the whole time and kept on glancing back at me through the car mirror.

“I’m sorry to interrupt your story, Jacklyne. But there’s something I have to say,” Austin suddenly said, taking a deep breath. “Jack, I’m honestly really sorry. Something like this isn’t normal and I was just freaked out. Can you forgive me?” I could tell this was taking a toll on him, and he’s been through enough.

I nodded. “Yeah, it’s fine. You’re lucky I don’t hold a grudge,” I said, laughing a bit. There was no use in staying mad at him because it’s just a waste of time.

He sighed in relief. “Thank you. So... Serena, where are we going?”

“There’s a Whole Foods down the road. We’re checking for Nutella.” She sounded so serious as she explained this.

I couldn’t help but laugh a bit. “We’re in a zombie apocalypse and we’re going to Whole Foods to find Nutella?” I asked, glancing towards Jacklyne.

“This isn’t a joking matter, Jack. Nutella is very important to me and I need it right now more than life,” Jacklyne explained, unbuckling her seatbelt when we got into the Whole Foods parking lot.

“Jack, how about you go in with Jacklyne and Austin and I will wait out here so we can make a quick getaway if it’s dangerous,” Serena suggested.

“Ok, sounds good,” I said, getting out of the car and going inside the grocery store with Jacklyne. She knew exactly where to go as she lead me to the back of the store, into the right aisle.

“Hell yes!” Jacklyne enthused when she found some Nutella. She smiled as she grabbed six jars and started walking back towards the front of the store.

“Not so fast,” I yelled, running to catch up to her. I knew I had only known her for like, 20 minutes, but she was part of my team and I couldn’t let anything happen to her.

She turned around and waited. “Jack, there’s nothin-”

Right before my eyes a zombie jumped onto her and Nutella flew everywhere. Jacklyne’s scream filled the deserted grocery store.

“Jacklyne!” I yelled. I quickly grabbed a jar of canned fruit and threw it at the zombie. It was a horrible idea coming in here without a weapon.

The zombie looked disgruntled as it looked up at me and started moaning.

I ripped a piece of shelving off and hit the zombie, shoving it through its eye and then pushing the corpse across the next few aisles.

“Jacklyne, are you ok?” I asked, kneeling down next to her. I checked her wounds, and noticed a bite mark right on her neck.

“Jack... it’s bad, isn’t it?” She asked, her voice weak.

I nodded. “It’s ok, though. I can fix this,” I said, taking my shirt off and putting pressure on her neck.

She laughed a bit. “Thank you for giving me a nice view of your abs before I die,” she murmured.

“You’re not going to die.” She couldn’t die! I only met her a few days ago! We were going to be great friends!

“Jack, I was bitten by a zombie. I’m going to die,” she said, bluntly. “Can you just end it? I don’t want to be one of those... zombies. I just... I just want to die.”

“Jacklyne, stop talking like that, you’re not dying. Not on my watch.”

Her eyes were slowly slipping shut. “Just let it end,” she whispered before her head fell lifelessly.

I felt tears well up in my eyes as I checked for a pulse. There was nothing. She was gone in a matter of seconds. I sat there and cried before I glanced over at the zombie I just killed. I looked at the metal pole sticking out of its eye.

I took a deep breath and made my way over to the zombie. I ripped the metal shelving out of it and walked back over to Jacklyne. I held the pole over her heart and closed my eyes, letting a few more tears out.

Making it quick, I pushed the pole into her heart and ran out of the grocery store. I went back into the car and saw Serena and Austin’s expecting faces.

“She... she didn’t make it. She was bit,” I felt myself start to cry again as I put my shirt back on and hid my face in it.

“Get out,” Serena muttered.

“What?” I asked, completely dumbfounded.

“Get out of the car. Both of you.”

“This is my car! Look, I know that losing your friend is hard and all, but we can get through this together,” Austin tried. Obviously he wasn’t really a pro at trying to calm girls down.

“Get the fuck out of the fucking car.” She pulled a gun out of the driver’s side compartment and pointed it towards Austin. “I can get through it by myself.”

“Come on, Austin. Let it go,” I said, making my way out of the car.

“You can’t just kick me out of my own car!” I heard Austin yell. I made my way over to the passenger’s side and opened the door.

“Watch me,” Serena shot, motioning with her gun for him to get out.

Without letting him protest anymore, I pulled him and his bag out of the car. With no hesitation, Serena drove away at full speed, the car screeching down the abandoned city roads.
