Austin's POV

San Jose, CA

I was hung-over when I heard the banging on my door. The night before I got so drunk I couldn’t even remember my name, and then I slept for fourteen hours. I knew that that Jack guy was crazy and I was totally safe in the comfort of my apartment.

I groaned as I got up to see who was at the door. When I looked through the peephole, you could say I was a little more than surprised when there was a group of three ugly, moaning monsters outside my door.

Panic washed over me when I realized how stupid I really was. I should’ve listened to Jack and now I’m going to die!

I immediately began stacking dressers and chairs in front of my chain-locked door, and then started packing. I took my small backpack and stuffed a handful of clothes inside. I put ammo in the side and front pockets and put guns in my jacket and jean pockets, but what I did next was stupid.

While I was still in panic mode I decided to sit down and take a deep breath. That deep breath soon turned into a deep sleep.

I woke up to the sound of furniture being knocked over. My eyes widened when I saw a crowd of monsters climbing and falling over my dressers and chairs. I jumped out of my chair and backed into my balcony door – that was my only way out.

I quickly opened the door, stepped outside and closed the door before looking over the edge. My apartment was only three stories up, but for some reason three seemed like a really big number now. Looking down, it felt like I was three-thousand stories up.

I jumped when I heard a thump come from behind me. The monsters were now running into my screen door, and my heart was pounding. I had to get out of here, and quickly.

I took a deep breath before hoisting myself over the ridge and jumping down to the ground. I fell with a hard strike to the earth. I groaned from the pain that shot through my right ankle and just laid there for a while.

After a few minutes, I got up and started walking towards my car, before I remembered that I forgot my keys upstairs.

What an idiot I am! How could I be so stupid? Firstly, I got blackout drunk and second, I fell asleep while my apartment so being brought down by a pack of those... those things! And then I forgot my stupid keys! Idiot, idiot, idiot.

I bet if Jack were here he would know how to hotwire this stupid thing.

“Hey, are you ok?” I turned around and saw a girl running towards me.

“I’m fine. Please just... don’t come near me.” I couldn’t stand myself right now, let alone letting a girl be around me.

“I’m Jacklyne, I have some bandage in my First Aid kit for that ankle,” she said, putting her bag down and digging through it. I didn’t know how to respond, so I just let her keep looking. She had red hair that was up in a messy bun with a dirty white tank top and skinny jeans. She also had a tattered pair of black Vans on.

“Thank you, Jacklyne. Um, I’m Austin.”

“Not a problem. Do you have a group?” She asked as she finally pulled some gauze out of her First Aid kit. I sat on the hood of my car as she took my shoe off and began wrapping my ankle.

“I don’t think so.... I kind of missed my opportunity,” I confessed.

She nodded, taking a quick look away from my ankle to look around. “Well, if you want to have a group, me and my friend, Serena could always use an extra hand,” she offered.

“If you don’t mind, I would love that.”

“Jacklyne, we have food for life!” Another girl yelled, running towards us. She had vibrant blue hair and a beanie. She had an awesome septum piercing and galaxy spacers. She was wearing a tight Nirvana tank top and black leggings, she also had tattered red Vans.

“Did you find Nutella?” Jacklyne asked hopefully, putting my shoe back on and getting off the ground. “By the way, this is my new friend, Austin.”

“There wasn’t any Nutella, but I found Goldfish and premade brownies,” Serena replied with a smile. “And nice to meet you Austin, I’m Serena.”

I nodded, not sure how to respond to these girls. They were so different from my ex wife, it was kind of weird – they were very weird.

“Goddamn it, where’s the damn Nutella?” Jacklyne cursed under her breath, hoisting her backpack on her back.

“Hey Austin, is this your car?” Serena asked, ignoring Jacklyne’s sorrow. “Do you have the keys?”

“It’s my car, but um, I kind of forgot my keys in my apartment that is now being infested by the um – those things.”

“The zombies,” Jacklyne said, correcting me.

“No worries, I just have to hotwire it,” Serena said, striving towards the driver’s side of the car. She pulled a hanger out of her backpack and picked at the lock through the window, unlocking the car in seconds.

“So Austin, how’s life?” Jacklyne asked, looking through Serena’s groceries and opening a pack of Pringles.

“Why do you seem so laid back about this?” I asked, leaning on the hood on the hood of my car.

She shrugged. “I guess I just try too hard to hide my anxiety. Also, killing things is really fun, especially when you shoot them in the head and their guts and brains fly everywhere.”

I tried not to act creeped out as I cleared my throat. “So what’s um... what’s your story?”

“Serena and I were having a sleepover in the comforts of my dark basement. We slept for a long time and stayed down there for a few days because we had no reason to leave. When we decided to go out and buy some ice cream sandwiches and more Nutella, the cashier was a zombie and we almost died,” she explained, offering me some Pringles.

I shook my head and she put them back in her backpack. I opened my mouth to reply but the sound of an engine roaring to life interrupted me.

“Fuck yeah!” Serena praised herself.

“Woohoo!” Jacklyne enthused, climbing in the backseat.

I reluctantly climbed in the passenger’s seat and Serena began driving. She had the windows down as we cruised down the road. I felt myself beginning to calm down around these girls, until I heard a scream.

“Mother fucker!” Someone yelled, rather loudly.

Serena slammed on the breaks and I lurched forward, and looked at her confusedly. “Why did you stop?” I asked.

“There’s someone in there,” she said, pulling a gun out of her backpack and making her way towards the distress call in an abandoned building.

“C’mon Austin, let’s do some killing,” Jacklyne cheered from behind me. She left the car and I quickly followed after, because I wasn’t staying anywhere by myself because odds are I’ll get in some sort of trouble.

I stood in the doorway and saw Serena shooting zombies and pushing them aside, getting to a familiar person perched up on top of a filing cabinet.

“Oh, hello again, Austin,” Jack said, kicking a zombie in the head. I could tell he was pissed at me, and I couldn’t blame him.

“Cowabunga!” Jacklyne yelled, ripping a floor board from the ground. She began smacking zombies all over the place, she was completely out of control.

“Austin, watch out!” Serena yelled.

I turned around on instinct, seeing a zombie lurch towards me. I quickly backed out of the way and it fell to the floor and began clawing at me, so I pulled out my gun and shot it in the head. I didn’t even hesitate in the slightest.

“We have to go before more show up,” Serena said, leading everyone back to the car. Jacklyne didn’t hesitate and kick around any dead zombies that were in her way.
