The Next Day
As I knock on the door, I hear laughing on the other side of the door. It sounded like Cecilia, Anthony's mom. She still lived right next door to my mom even after I moved out. I swear, those two were inseparable, like how Tony and I were when we were little.
"Higher, Anthony!" I yell as I'm swinging back and forth. I hear him sigh but felt him push with more force.
I giggle as I feel myself getting higher, making Anthony laugh as well. But I decide to look down, then realizing how high I really was.
"Tony!!! This is too high!" I scream at him, tears rolling down my cheeks. I kick my legs around, hoping that I hit something that will make me stop.
Quickly, I feel someone grab onto the chains of the swing and everything stopped moving. Slowly opening my eyes, I see Anthony right in front of me, worry written on his face.
"Nati, I'm so so sorry. I didn't mean to push you so high." He wraps his arms around me as I cry into his chest.
I nod as I sniffle. He starts to play with my hair, which helps me calm down. Once I stopped crying, he pulls me away and smiles at me.
"You're such a little kid for crying about going too high." Chuckling, I punch his arm.
"Hey it went pretty high. If you were in my position, you would've been crying too."
He sucks his teeth and puts his arm around my shoulder.
"I'm a man and men don't cry."
"You're only nine, Tony. You're too young to be a man."
"Whatever, Nati. Let's go home, my mom said she was making flan."
"Race ya there!" I dash out of his arm and start running down the side walk. His laughter fills the street as he tries to catch up to me.
"Natalia! I haven't seen you in so long mi hija!" Anthony's mom snaps me out of my flashback and embraces me into a hug.
I couldn't help but smile and hug her back. I just wasn't sure if I was smiling because of my memory or because of Cecilia.
She lets go and lets me inside the living room, where my mom was there watching the TV.
I walk straight past the couch where she was sitting and stood right in front of the TV.
She looks right up at me and smiles guiltily, letting me know that she knows exactly why I'm here.
"Hola, mi niña. Que haces aquí?" She turns off the TV behind me as Cecilia sits back down on the couch watching us.
"Mama, you know exactly why I'm here. Why are you helping Anthony? I know Lenny sent him here that night but I don't understand why you would do that when I was with Damian."
Cecilia's eyes widen and looks back and forth from me to my mom.
"Hija, you know I no like Damian. Y Anthony ha cambiado muchísimo." She explains. Cecilia stands up and walks towards me.
