"Yes, mother," I said tiredly.
I was watching my sandwich on the frying pan as my mother's voice came out of my phone.
"Can you please come? It'll be only an hour, sweetheart. Your brother will be very happy to see you there." My mother tried again, I shut my eyes and clenched my jaw. I hated it when she tried to use my little brother to make me do stuff. "Jules, your dad and I really want you to come, it has been so long, and you haven't visited him, not once."
"No." I snapped. I heard my mother sigh.
And just then, Lucia walked into the kitchen rubbing the sleep away from her eyes. I took my phone from the kitchen counter, took it off loudspeaker and pressed it against my ear. Lucia walked around me, heading straight for the fridge. I turned around, lowering my voice.
"I told you guys once and hundreds of times, I do not want to go. Accept my decision and let it go. If you want me to see Jules, I can just pick him up afterwards or you can drop him off, but let it go. I said no."
The line was dead for a long second but then my mother's voice filled the silence. "Yes, honey, of course."
She knew better than to push this subject.
"How about I drop him at your place?" She asked, her tone light once again. "Or at the coffee shop? He might be hungry, and you guys can have quality time and not stay at home."
"I'll be there at around five, so drop him off around that time." And that's our weekly conversation. After telling me she loved me, she hung up and I turned my attention back to my sandwich.
I sat at the kitchen island and ate my sandwich. Lucia was making her breakfast in silence, and I should've just eaten my sandwich but I couldn't stop wondering why it was that she didn't like me. Last night, I kept thinking back to the first week she came home, how we got along, how I was actually nice. I was confused as to why she switched up on me just like that.
I swung my chair from right to left, trying to think of something that I might have done for Lucia to change her attitude towards me so drastically.
"So," I began, usually I didn't start conversations with Lucia because I feared she wouldn't answer but I guess I could give it a try. "What's your girlfriend's name?"
Lucia snorted, giving me a side look as she got back to her scrambled eggs.
"Julieta," Lucia finally said, her voice was calm and sweet, she had a pretty voice when she didn't sound so irritating.
"Hmm, interesting." I turned to face her. She was scratching the back of her neck; her top was oversized and it was sliding off her right shoulder.
It was weird how something so little could have such a weird effect on me. And suddenly, I saw Lucia the same way I saw her when she first walked through my door. And then, another thought popped into my mind... I wasn't stupid, I knew how people looked at me, lust and envy were always easy to spot but Lucia... she never looked at me with either of those emotions.
"Lucia..." I began, biting my lower lip as I pushed my plate aside.
"Yes...?" She turned around, her brown eyes meeting mine. I smirked, trying to be flirtatious but before I could even try, she stopped me. "Uh— stop that."
I couldn't help but laugh. "What?"
"You do realise I don't like you, right?" She laughed too, shaking her head at me.
"Why not?" I was truly shocked and a little bit insulted if I was being honest.
"Because, no offence but full offence, you're a bitch? Maybe, I don't know?" She said as if it was oh, so obvious... I gave her a look and she shook her head.
