3: Three Days

Summer flew by. Just like dad had predicted back in June, business was crazy. I got a job as a life guard at the neighborhood pool and between that and the diner, I had saved up almost four grand.

It was early August and I was leaving for John Williams University in three days. Unfortunately, over the summer, Luke and I had lost touch. He began to  be distant and we just stopped talking. It was depressing but I had met a girl named Caroline at the pool. We became good friends and hung out a lot.

"So, are you excited?" Caroline asked as she helped me pack up the last of my things.

"I guess you could say that. I mean it will be nice to be out of the house but I'm going to miss the diner."

"Wow." We said in unison. Caroline was heading off to Clemson to study agriculture. It's sad that we have to part ways but we promised to keep in touch.

"I can't believe I'm leaving this place." I exclaimed.

"I know. My parents begged me to stay and go to JWU since it's an hour away, but I refused."

"It will be nice to be in a different place for awhile." I suggested while trying to find a positive way to look at this situation. "You wanna sleep over?" I asked.

"Sure." The night was young and since mom and dad were still working, Caroline and I ordered a pizza and binge watched American Horror Story. "What's your favorite season?" She asked before taking a bite of her pizza.

"Three. Emma Roberts is unbelievably talented and she and Evan Peters are my OTP." She laughed. "What?" I asked, my mouth full.

"I didn't like Emma and Evan. They were too perfect for each other. I thought her and that actor who played Luke were pretty hot together." Hmmm, ironic. We continued chatting about AHS before we checked the time.

"Huh, strange. My dad isn't home and it's almost 12:30 am." I got up to get my phone and give him a call but was sent to voicemail.

"Maybe your dad is out with some friends."

"Maybe but their usually is home before midnight."

"Don't worry about it. Let's go to bed. I'm pooped." We headed upstairs to get ready for bed. When our faces were washed and teeth were brushed, we headed to bed.

I woke up around eleven the next morning. Caroline was still asleep. I took my phone off the charger and was pleased to see a message from dad.

Dad: sorry kiddo. I was out with John and didn't see that you called. I crashed at his place. Love you

I quickly replied.

Me: okay sounds good. See ya later! Love you too!

I exited out of messages and opened up snapchat. After replying to a few people, I checked Instagram. I scrolled through my feed, only liking a few celebrity pictures here or there when my thumb froze. It was a picture of Luke. He was with a girl. I tapped on the picture to see if she was tagged. She was.

I tapped on her name and was taken to her profile. I usually didn't stalk like this but I was curious and couldn't help but feel a tad bit jealous. Her name was Rachel Anderson. She was a rising sophomore at South Carolina State University. She seemed to party a lot and had lots of pictures with guys.

I exited out of her page and decided to get up and make breakfast. I snuck out of the room and headed to the kitchen to put on a pot of coffee. I decided on waffles with sausage and eggs.

Caroline woke up around twenty minutes later, just as I was finishing up.

"Morning!" She said while fetching a mug and pouring some coffee in it.

"Morning. How did you sleep?" I asked, serving our plates.

"Good. Did you ever here from your parents?"

"Yeah, my dad crashed at his friend John's house."

"Oh, okay. That's good. At least you know where he his." I nodded and we ate in silence.

Finally, dad came home. He told me he was going off to the diner to work and that he would be home around nine tonight. Caroline headed home to pack up the rest of her stuff, leaving me with a messy kitchen and a boring day. I offered to help her but she declined and said that her cousins were helping.

"I'll talk to you later. And I do think you should reach out to him." She suggested referring to Luke.

"I know, I know." We bid our goodbyes and promised to see each other before we left. Caroline was right, though. I got out my phone to text Luke.

Me: hey Luke! We haven't talked in a while and I was just checking in. Hope you're doing well
