"Mom, I can't take this, this thing inside of me any longer." I said in rage, I could see my hazel eyes glowing through the reflection of the mirror by the fireplace. The fireplace was the only thing to keep us warm through the long winter nights. My mother decided she wanted us to live in a log cabin in the woods because it helped her get in touch with her "inner wolf". She had always told me that the wolves inside of us is a gift, and that we should embrace them instead of fight them.

"Call it what you want," was my same response. "This thing will always be an annoying monster to me. It ruins my life." Then I stormed upstairs.

"Kora, I understand that you think what you have is a curse but you have to realize that it is a great blessing. You just need to let her in for a change."

"A change? If I even growl at someone, I'm afraid it will take control and kill someone." I shuddered at the thought then removed it completely from my head.

"Watch your tone with me," she warned and then said, "Your wolf only acts that way if you get angry or upset. Your emotions are what call to your wolf the most. She is only trying to protec-." My mother was cut off by my sudden outburst.

"I don't need this monster to protect me! I can do that all on my own."

The look on her face told me I was in some deep trouble if I didn't stop, but I was too upset I didn't pay any attention.

"Kora, you do remember the day your wolf aroused in you?" My mother asked me.

"I don't want to talk about it." I said shaking my head as the memories of my father's death played over and over inside my head. It was just a few years ago, but I remembered it like it was only a second ago. My father and I had just come from the grocery store on our way home. My father was happy because it had been their anniversary and he wanted to surprise my mother with a special romantic evening. I wanted my mother to be pleased with the surprise as much as he did. The night was beautiful with a full moon lighting the way toward our home. My mother loved full moons. She would always stand outside of the cabin and just soak up as much of it as she could.

As my dad rounded the corner to the way home, a drunk driver ran straight through the red light heading our way. My dad jerked the wheel around trying to avoid him and made the car spin into an electricity pole. He ran into it so hard it was knocked to the ground, and I could feel my body heating up to the point where I couldn't breathe. The glass from the windows cut deep in my arms and gut. I was in exasperating pain and couldn't move a finger. I call for my father but he never responded. When I looked towards him, the sight I had was the only thing that called on my inner beast.

He was in a worst condition. His throat was cut clean by the broken glass that flew off the windows and his body was burning in fire. The same fire that was burning me. But seeing him, dead made something snap inside me. I effortlessly threw my father's body over my shoulders and kicked the door completely off the handle. The monster inside me was angry and wanted blood.

My eyes started to glow and my claws and fangs showed as well. I placed my father's body on the ground and even though I knew it was useless to save him, I still pushed on his chest doing that mouth to mouth thing they taught me at school, hoping his chest would rise and fall on its own. Nothing. I was in pure agony. The beast inside me took over and I threw my head back and let out an ear pitching howl. I could feel the cuts and the burns on my skin began to heal on its own and I got up to look for the pathetic driver who hit us, but he was long gone, and I knew it would be useless trying to find him.

When I looked around, I saw the people who stuck around to help with a mixture of shocked and terrified expressions. Some were just staring with their hand covering their ears, and others were on their phones. Obviously calling 911 about the accident and the crazy beast running around. I couldn't stay there and let them take me to some scientist that would cut me open and run me through test. So, I ran. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me back home to tell my mother, leaving my father behind. I knew that the ambulance would show up and be ready to take him someplace safe.

I continued running. I ran deeper and deeper into the woods through the trail I'm familiar with to my home. I burst through the door. At first my mother was surprised, but that was quickly over taken by pain and sorrow. I think because of the fact that my face was full of blood and my clothes have been burned.

"He's dead, isn't he." She said in a raspy voice. I nodded as the tears rushed down my cheek. "I could hear the sorrow and morn in your howl." She came toward me and held me tight in her arms. That was the day the horrible beast came into my life, or my soul, or whatever. All I know now is that, it was the worst day of my entire life. A day I would give anything to take away.

"Kora," my mother said snapping me back to reality.

"Why would you dare bring up my father's death?" I asked her as my eyes field with moisture.

"Honey," she said. "I didn't bring it up to remind you of his death, I wanted to tell you the reason your wolf came out on such a treacherous event." She sighed, and walked towards me, and gently pulled the string of hair behind my ears. "The reason she came out was because she felt you begin to fade. You were dying Kora. Not to mention she also wanted to protect your father who she knew was only human, and unable to protect himself at the state he was in. Our wolves usually come out at times of need, or when they've been called upon. They also come out when you begin to feel angry, or utterly sad."

Tears began to fall freely from my eyes, and the next words to come out of my mouth hurt my mother the most. "Yeah? Well I wished the damned thing was never in me to start with." With that, I stormed to my room and slammed the door.
