Chapter 5 - Target Audience (Narcissus Narcosis)

{One month later…}

Jessie groaned as her phone rang, fumbling in the dark for the light. She raised a curious eyebrow as she looked at her phone. Why was her manager calling her…at midnight? Reluctantly, she answered.

“Hey, Frank…what’s wrong?” Jessie sighed into her pillow as she rubbed her tired eyes.

“Your friends affect the way people see you and the band, Hun…I hope you know that.” Frank replied. He sounded cheerful enough though, so she let the comment slide.

“Last time I checked, the majority of our fans also love bands and people like Marilyn Manson,” Jessie rolled her eyes as she forced herself to sit up, effectively stopping herself from falling asleep on the phone. “Is that why you called at…twelve ten in the morning?”

“No, it’s to remind you that those three secret gigs you and I organised are next week…” Frank replied jovially. He seemed to be enjoying this. “You know? The ones where the fans had to find you and the others specifically to get tickets?”

“Yeah…I know.” Jessie yawned.

“It’s Friday, Jessie…” Frank continued cautiously. “The first show is on Monday…are you guys on top of things?”

“Yeah, we’re going to head over to the first venue on Sunday to set up and do sound checks… chill out.” Jessie ran her hand down her face, exhausted. “Look, we’ve been practicing all month…” Jessie smirked, “I’m surprised you waited this long to call and check up on us.”

“I know I’m a nag.” He sighed. “I just want you guys to make it big!” he paused. “Just don’t go listening to Manson’s track ‘Fuck Frankie’ after I hang up.”

“Who said anything about waiting til you hang up?” Jessie laughed and mimicked the female voice from the track ‘Fuck Frankie’ and laughed when he groaned.

“Alright, you’ve made your point.” Frank sighed. “Alright, well, I guess I’ll see you guys at the gig…you crazy girl.” Jessie laughed as he hung up and she slid down the bed a little, stretching.

Jessie knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep again. It had taken her ages to fall asleep the first time…and now she was even more worried about the upcoming shows than she had been when she’d first went to bed. With a disgruntled sigh, Jessie swung her feet out of bed and stumbled through the house towards the living room. Seeing the light on in the kitchen, Jessie changed her destination and smiled at her brother as she went to the fridge.

“Hey…why are you up?” Rick frowned at her across the kitchen counter as he put his phone down.

“Frankie called!” Jessie grinned with fake enthusiasm as she poured herself a glass of milk and sat on a stool. “Making sure we’re ready for Monday…and Wednesday…and Friday!”

Rick chuckled. “It’s coz you’re considered the ‘front man’, or ‘leader’, of the band, sis. You’re the one that’s meant to be in charge…and he worries coz you’re young.” Rick winked at her. “He’ll get over it.” He paused, a smug smirk flickering across his face. “He’d get over it sooner if you were dating someone…which brings me to my actual question.” He grinned at her. “Are you and Marilyn…”

Jessie gaped at him. “Really? You’re just gonna let that hang there?” her eyes narrowed at her brother then shrugged, “And, I don’t think Frank would class him as responsible…which is what he wants.”

“Screw what he wants!” Rick scoffed. “You be with whoever you want to be with! And fuck anyone who says different!” Rick smiled a little. “You told me that.”
