"I've missed you so much! You really must come home for more holidays. I don't know who's worse, you or your brother." A brother? Colton never mentioned siblings, let alone a brother. I wonder if he's anything like Colton.

"I do what I can." Colton looks at me with a small smile. He takes my hand in his and he gives it a light squeeze. "Mom, this is my girlfriend Victoria." Mrs. Parker looks in my direction for the first time and stands up straight.

"Oh." She says simply. "I forgot you were bringing a girl home."

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mrs. Parker." I say with a smile.

"I'm sure it is." She responds. "I wish I could say the same about you." My smile drops a little.

"I'm sorry?" I ask, not sure I heard her correctly.

"You don't plan to wear that to dinner, do you?" I look down at my black yoga pants and purple t-shirt.

"Uh, no I was planning to wait just before dinner." I look over at Colton who runs his hand through his hair. He only does that if he's nervous.

"Good! You look like a complete street urchin." She laughs lightly and my smile fades away completely.

"Mom, please." Colton says with a sigh. Mrs. Parker looks at him and puts her hands up in defense. "Alright, I'm going to check on dinner."

"I'll give Vicky a tour of the house."

"Okay, don't take too long. Your brother and sister will be here soon." Mrs. Parker leaves the room and I turn to Colton with raised eyebrows.

"What was that?" I ask. "What could I have possibly done to offend her?"

"You didn't do anything." He sighs. "She's complicated, my entire family is. I wasn't sure if I wanted to bring you here to meet them, because of who they are. You're sweet and loving towards everyone, and my family is biased towards rich people. I'm embarrassed of them."

"Don't be." I caress his cheek. "You can't change who they are."

"I just want them to be nice to you. You're my girl and they should love you too."

"I don't need them to love me." I give a small smile. "You're enough for me." I place a soft kiss on his lips and he smiles

"This is the reason you're the love of my life." He says. "I was planning to give you this after dinner, but I don't think I can wait any longer." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small black box. My pulse begins to race as my mind jumps to one conclusion.

"Colton, I..."

"Just a second." He puts his hand up to stop me. He opens the box and a diamond ring shines before me. The silver band lined with four small diamond hearts and one big diamond heart in the middle, a medium sized diamond sets at the center of it all. "Before you flip out like you usually do, let me explain. This isn't an engagement ring." I sigh with relief and place my hand across my chest as my heart beat returns to normal. "Would it really be so bad to marry me?" he smiles as my reaction.

"No. I just..." I trail off as I think of my list of priorities before marriage.

"I know; you have a list. College, passing the bar, having a stable job, then a family. That's why I got this promise ring for you. I want to marry you someday, Vicky. I want us to have a family, and I want us to have kids who look just like you. I want to wake up next to you every morning and see your beautiful face. It's pathetic really how much I need you in my life." He laughs at himself as he nervously bites his lip.
