Chapter 8

*Aaron*

After a moment, I finally get up and follow Grace to her bedroom. I hesitate as I lift my hand to knock on the door. Should I go in there and attempt to make her feel better? Didn't this happen because I've been so nice to her lately? Will going in there make everything better or worse? I take a deep breath before knocking on the door. I wouldn't be able to go home knowing that I left her here like this.

"Grace, can I come in?" I ask. No response. "I'm coming in, okay?"

I slowly open the door to see a mound under the blankets. I make my way over and lay on the bed beside her. I pull the blanket down so that it's no longer covering her face. Dried tears streak her cheeks.

"Just go home." She says, her voice cracking.

"No. I want to make sure you're okay first."

"Of course I'm not okay!" she exclaims. "I kissed you, Aaron."

"I know, I was there." I laugh lightly.

"It's not funny. It's embarrassing. I can be so stupid sometimes."

"You're not stupid. You have feelings and that's okay. We have a history together and this dinner tonight was really nice. It was like we were a family."

"So you feel the same way?"

"No, I didn't say that. What you were feeling is completely justified. I'm sorry if I've led you on in any way. I just want us to be friends. I want us to be able to co-parent, but also talk as if we're really good friends. You understand?"

She looks away from me and looks towards the ceiling. I can still see the light shade of pink on her cheeks from blushing.

"It's Victoria, isn't it?" she asks.

I can't let history repeat itself and lose any chance I have with her. I have to prove that I'm a responsible adult now, and that I am and will be loyal to only her.

"Yeah." I say with a smile. "I'm trying to win her back, and I can't do that if I step into a romantic relationship with you."

"She has a boyfriend doesn't she?"

"Yeah, but he doesn't seem hard to get rid of. He's already making things tense in their relationship."

"Is he making things tense, or are you? Something tells me it's not going to be as easy as you think."

*Victoria*

After a long dinner, I sit with Colton and Camden in the living room. Camden talks excitedly about his first year of residency,

"The people that I see every day, it makes you wonder how they got themselves into those situations."

"Are you looking to be a general practitioner, pediatrician, or a surgeon?"

"Definitely a surgeon! I want to be a neurologist. The brain is such a fascinating thing, isn't it? I mean, something in your brain is telling you to date my brother. Clearly you haven't seen his old pictures."

"Don't, Camden!" Colton yells as Camden leaves the room. "Camden, stop!" Colton jumps from the couch and follows Camden. I never would have guessed how similar Colton and his bother would be. The rest of their family is cold and distant. Colton and Camden are bright and funny. Why can't the rest of the family be like them?
