Chapter 7
*Aaron*
Sophie jumps up and down excitedly as we wait for Grace to answer the door. When the door opens, Grace stands wearing a burgundy sweater with a black skirt. The cute apron covering her clothes is covered in flour and a wooden spoon rests in the pocket.
"You're actually cooking?" I ask. "I'm surprised a fire hasn't spread yet."
"It smells so good!" Sophie exclaims as she runs inside.
"Very funny." She smirks. "My mom gave me a couple of recipes." She shrugs. "I thought I'd try to make this an actual Thanksgiving this year."
"Well, good luck with that. I just hope you don't start a fire. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon to pick up Sophie." I turn to leave and she reaches out, grabbing my arm.
"Wait, you're not going to stay?"
"No, I'm just dropping Sophie off. It's your holiday this year, remember?"
"I know, but it's better to spend it with people. I bet you're planning on going home and having takeout as your Thanksgiving dinner."
"Yeah, actually I was."
"Come in." She pulls me inside and closes the door behind us. "Make yourself at home. I'm hoping everything will be done by five."
"Do you need any help?"
"Yeah actually. It may make things go a lot faster."
I follow Grace into the kitchen which is a bigger mess that I expected. Dishes and half prepared food covers the kitchen counter and table.
"You've been busy." I say.
"I just want everything to turn out the best it can. You know, these last two years have been the best in my entire life so far. I love being a mom and it's great to know that Sophie loves me too. We've come so far from being strangers to each other. I'm trying to make Thanksgiving perfect, with the perfect meal, because I feel like that's what a real mother would do."
"Well, so far everything is looking great. You may just get what you wish for."
*Victoria*
I guess once you're a bully, you'll always be a bully. Why can't she just be happy for her son and learn to love his girlfriend?
"If that's the case, why did he buy me this ring?" I hold up my hand to show her the ring. The kitchen light reflects off the diamond. "It's the promise ring he gave me, not even an hour ago."
She examines the ring for a moment before storming out of the room. I try to hold back the smile of victory attempting to spread across my face.
"Colton Spencer Parker, get out here right now!" she yells down the hallway.
A door opens and then closes and soon Colton is being dragged into the room by his mother. She roughly takes my hand and forces it up, the ring facing them.
"What is this?" she asks.
"Mom, I'm not in the mood." He sighs.
"Well you better get in the mood. You've known this girl for a year. You know nothing about each other!"
"It's a promise ring, mom. It's not like we're engaged."
"You may as well be. I don't want you to ruin your life. You have a great future lined up for you."
